its still millenial cacs that make up their fanbase though. and if we judge artists by their fanbase, james brown is the gold standard. supported by all of his community. these odd future nikkaz though, i mean, im still baffled bythe whole thing. they were pushed by cac rap critics on blogs and their fanbase seem really annoying and entitled.
You also forget that James brown as well as other artist benefited from
music being more narrowly focused. James brown didn't have to worry
about having a circuit to tour, the chitlin circuit existed. James brown didn't
have to worry about never reaching anyone because radio as a mass medium was
still viable, video hadn't yet killed the radio star. plus he had major label backing !
James Brown is without a doubt a phenomenal talent who could play multiple
instruments, created an entire genre by himself and was a strong band leader
As for odd future, it was not so much "they" that was pushed by "Cac"
rap critics, it was really for the most part just Tyler the Creator.
His music videos were intentionally shocking, his lyrics were purposefully vulgar
and this caused people's ears to perk up and pay attention.
Being a pretty competent producer on top of that has allowed him to amass
a fan base, while the rest of Odd future doesn't seem to get the same treatment.
Matt martian and Syd The Kid have dropped two phenomenal records.
One is more R&B and the other more in line with Neo-Soul.
Matt Martian also has an electronic music project he's pursues outside of his R&B production.
EARL has long since stopped rapping in a horrorcore shock rap fashion.
Domo sounds more like G Rap/Big Pun than he does an Eminem clone.
They aren't given a fair shake because of Tyler, he colors everyone's perception
of the group. Leading to them never listening to some fantastic music and/or branding
them as music for "white" people or music that only "white" people would listen to, which in
no way should limit the enjoyment of the music.
