this is what pops up when you search for tyler getting me tooed. it's been several years since he came out as bi so he's really good at staying in character or goes both way.

What great hip hop artist doesn’t have a hit record? All the “greats” have at least 1. He’ll even Dead Prez got Hip Hop that will be played forever (longer than any record Tyler ever made)

The way he’s been hyped and pushed on the mainstream level as this Pharrell/Kanye hybrid falls extremely short when you can’t deliver hit records like those two did.
Earfquake was a hit imo

Platinum records are hits and he has several no matter how much a dusty old head tries to change the definition of a hit record or hates it or how out of touch they are :mjlol: This era has passed you flat tops by.… and nobody values your input.… Mobb Deep isn't dropping any new albums and that makes you sad...i know LMAO
I was literally on SOHH the day Yonkers dropped and the OF movement started. Still a huge fan of the Internet and Earl was/is my favorite spitter in the crew and of course Frank was dropping critically acclaimed classics. So I say this as someone who’s seen his whole career unfold.

But time to call it out. This man has NO hit records. Extremely average bars where he literally ain’t saying shyt. Earl’s I Don’t Like shyt I Don’t Go Outside lyrically shyts on anything Tyler has ever written and that album dropped 10 years ago.

He’s been compared to his idols Kanye and Pharrell but he’s literally nooooowhere near their level in terms of creativity or originality. He rehashes a lot of their sounds. He’s never produced a project or made a hit record for anyone while those two practically gave away hits in hip hop and R&B. To me there’s really nothing to compare between them other than they both rap and produce. I can’t think of one memorable record from his discography that stands out as something special. I have joints I really like (See You Again, Run It Up, Droppin Seeds) but they’re just nice cool records.

After a couple spins of the new album it just sounds like a mess. He’s trying to channel a Kaytranada vibe on some of the records but none of it rocks. He made a post after releasing the album talking about why people don’t dance anymore but you can’t dance to any of the shyt on this album! It doesn’t bounce or groove like that. You won’t see ANY shorties shakin they ass to this this summer.

He has amazing marketing and has crafted his image over the last decade brilliantly and I think he shines there more than any music he’s ever made. I know some Coli nikkas really like him and view him as some hip hop messiah but he doesn’t have any records that I truly want to go back and revisit after the initial drop and hype wears off. This year we got legit potential classic albums in :

Clipse - Let Go Sort ‘Em Out
Rome Streetz - Trainspotting
Larry June x Cardo - Until Night Comes
Larry June x Alc x Chainz - Life is Beautiful
MIKE - Showbiz!

Iceman coming soon and Freddie x Alc dropping this Friday. I can’t see this album topping any end of year lists or the joints I mentioned above from such a “critically acclaimed” artist.

What do yall think?

Is there any surprise that people here are out of touch with reality?

the next argument is gonna be that "no one plays that shyt outside/in clubs" or that "only weirdos listen to that shyt", well guess what, those same weirdos listened/bought his shyt enough that he has 50+ gold/plat certifications. People just be saying shyt.

And I'm not really a Tyler fan but no one has asked the questions: overrated, how? and by who? his fans? is it really a surprise that fans of artists aren't always objective?

Yeah he doesn't have traditional hits, that's not to be said as a L, that's a win!
Dude got himself to star status during his years as a independent artist, and he now got a huge fan base, getting lots of spins without radio or clubs pumping it, his story (even though I'm not a huge fan musically) is exactly what's beautiful in this era where you can say fukk the middleman, I'm talking straight to the audience

I like Tyler since Goblin but I would not put him in my top rappers and I never heard him being in any top ten rappers so I don't know how he is overrated

This is his best song, but would probably be an iconic one if someone who could sing sung it. Brings me back to my comparison about the and Gambino - he's elevated some of his songs with his performance while I think Tyler has a very low ceiling.

Thinking about Tyler's career I'd say - imagine Pharrell if we only measured him by the songs he fronted? We don't. We have all these great artists who have elevated his ideas.

Tyler isn't as good a front man as Kanye or as good a producer as the Neptunes. He would probably make real magic with a good collaborator who was a better recording/performance artist.
He's definitely not elite (yet ?) but OP said he had no hit which isn't true. A hit doesn't have to be iconic IMO just be popular and/or sell well.

He has a whopping 58 gold and platinum certifications. His biggest songs are See You Again and Earfquake which are 6x and 5x platinum. Both songs are from 2023.

He won a Grammy for best rap album in 2020 and 2022.

You don't like the music that's fine but career wise he's thriving.
