Back in the days, they lived off of the propaganda and reputation of having a powerful military force…

This “war” exposed them heavily. The infighting, coups, losses of manpower/equipment and all by their less militarized neighbor… they getting washed by anyone named US and China.

So going against all of NATO is a risky, kamikaze level course of action. Only thing that protects them is nukes…

The U.S. military didn't need to leave Afghanistan. I'm fairly certain that they could have had some presence indefinitely. Sure they would be catching strays the entire time but that's what occupation often is. I'm not advocating for that, I don't think the U.S. had any business invading Afghanistan or Iraq.
