my dad ran his own cab service during his retirement... got put out of business when uber/lyft came thru and under cut him.

fukk them. those companies are anti-business.
So your dad gave benefits to his cab drivers? i highly doubt it.

My dad drove cabs for 12 years. Most medallion owners were scumbags. And NONE gave benefits to anybody. Stop the bytching.

their goal was to coast on a model that was legally questionable until there were self driving cars, then all those uber drivers would be jobless anyway.

fukk them

fukk "the gig economy"

america is a joke. so are tech bros with "new ideas" that is literally just undercutting regulations and banking on getting rich because they literally run all of the competition following regulations out of business.

i hope uber goes bankrupt and all their executives go to jail one day.

:manny:
The first half is probably true.

However, the cabbies who "followed regulations" also SET the damn regulations so they alone could benefit. They also refused to use apps. In doing so, they dug their own graves. Before the medallion cartels, anyone could paint their car yellow and pick people up. Cab companies were running a racket powered by debt slaves.

This is an interesting for ride share in CA. All the former Uber drivers will go to Lyft but there will be a surplus of drivers so drivers will not make as much and it benefits consumers. A possible monopoly with Lyft and they can raise prices which hurts consumers. However, costs may outweigh the benefits with considering every driver as a full-time employee. Another commentator already said Lyft is considering leaving the state too.
this effects lyft and uber

lets be real, this is more about taxes than anything.. while Uber reports how much each independent contractor makes, its up to the person themselves to file with the right forms or file at all. A lot of people if the taxes aint automatically taken out like a regular 9-5 then they miscalculate or just say fukk it.

now they just taxi drivers wearing they own car down to the bone :wow:

this has nothing to do with Trump, California is under democrat rule, AB5 is a democrat bill. AB5 basically codifies federal law, 'gig workers' are employees, Strippers have sued stripclubs and won. Uber/Lyft are cab companies in every sense of the word, they thought they could skirt around it by using an app? :mjlol:California wants their money. Nevada/NJ are doing their own version of AB5.

Uber/Lyft and their customers have been fukking over drivers for years and laughing all the way to the bank, AB5 fukks that up. Now they have to pay $15 /hr (as of 2022) or more to every driver and increase your rates.
Minimum wage

Not only do uber/lyft have to pay payroll taxes, they have to pay back taxes form when they started operating. AB5 is retroactive.

They not going nowhere. Something will get worked out.
yes, when uber pays back tax and payroll tax

If you can choose to work 1 hour today and 5 hours tomorrow and take the following 3 days off after that, are you really an employee?

yes

if uber wants to get out of it, they have to let drivers set their own rates (or set by cab regulations) and take a percentage (up to 20%).

the solution to this is mass transit, overhead high speed train system powered by solar. Small cars going small distances for cheap price in a $15 /hr state will fail.
