Universal Music is reorganizing its Island Def Jam Motown group into three standalone labels and promoting some key executives in the process.

Effective immediately, Island Def Jam will cease to exist, according to a press release issued by UMG. Def Jam will run as its own unit with longtime executive Steve Bartels at the helm as CEO (he was previously president and COO). Island will continue to run under David Massey but will be adding its own marketing, publicity and A&R departments. Motown will move its base to Los Angeles where it will be headed by Ethiopia Habtemariam, who has been promoted from SVP of Motown Records to president of the label, and run out of the Capitol Music Group. It will also be housed at the Capitol Tower in Hollywood alongside imprints Harvest, Virgin and Blue Note Records.

unfortunately it's a shame to see the "new" restructured DEF JAM headed by a dude who looks like this:

:mjlol:

<<<STEVE BARTELS

He was listed last year on the billboard power 100 at No. 53...he was an assistant to LA Reid......

shocking considering I thought the heads at UNIVERSAL would have been pleased with BARRY WEISS formerly of JIVE RECORDS with running the helm like he did for the past year ...guess he ain't cut out for the job :yeshrug:

But it's a gottdamn shame ......that neither Bu (akons brother)...Steve Stoute...Mona Scott...Blue Williams or even the O.G boss lady Sylvia Rhone would have been considered for the gig....

guess them negroes ain't "special" enough to lead an Urban imprint :shaq:

Hip-hop is on it's death bed.

I knew it.

50 cent was the last hurrah for the crazy sales in hiphop.

No one is selling anymore.

Even the R&B cats are not even selling as much.

Expect the industry to be invaded with white rappers like what happened when rock and roll was on it's dead bed till the cacs stole it.

Besides Jay (which was prolly just a figurehead) has there EVER been a Black Ceo at the helms of these major urban labels in the past decade? :leostare:

nah u right..... :manny:

the last REAL ONE in fact was Sylvia Rhone when she ran Universal/Motown and prior to that she was head of Elektra...

and that byatch (excuse my language) was like Lyor Cohen in drag :damn:

she fukked plenty of acts over......from Busta Rhymes to Motley Crue.......

she gave ZERO FUKKS when she was "boss"

remember when Drake talked shyt about her on that mixtape..and she backed his young a$$ down and made him APOLOGIZE :russ:

yeah man..........shyt is just WAYYYY TOO DAMN corporate for it even to be considered Urban.........

we all sharecropping breh :sadcam:
