I also don't understand how D.C rap didn't pop off, there's hella variables at play.

- crack
- it's the seat of government for the nation
- so many Black colleges
- it's still in a way kinda Southern
- they kinda had a front row seat for the New Jack Swing wave

...iono.

And i'll add Little Rock, and the Twin Cities.
Baltimore comes down to the crab mentality. You wont find a city with more haters per square mile. Also the club music scene here is kind g among the DJs. You go to other cities and new artist are being broke by DJs. Clubs here play mostly the local club music and only set aside a certain time for hip hop. So they only play the current hot shyt nationally. Theres always been a ton of rappers here tho and a lot are nice

I feel like DC and B'more both suffer from the crab in the barrel mentality....coupled with neighborhood/region rivalries. also 80s and 90s...DC was more about gogo over anything else.

I think that could've been used to their advantage. I mean, this kinda felt go-go ish and it banged...

North (and South) Carolina. Similar to VA, but Waaay less artists. Although we do have Cole, Little Brother/justice league, Supastition, Ski, and a few others.
The Carolinas are a good one. I didn't know Justice League was from there. But didn't somebody on here say Jeezy really grew up in SC?

By this I mean, what cities do you imagine would have a larger presence in hip-hop by making waves on national scale but never really did? If you're from there, feel free to post some material of the local acts and perhaps explain why nobody or just one or two artists popped hard enough (label politics, hood politics, crab in a barrel mentality, etc).

For me I'd say;
D.C. (outside of Wale)
Baltimore
Boston (outside of Guru, Statik Selectah and...Benzino :skip:)
Cleveland (I don't know anybody outside of BTNH but that may be my ignorance)
Not a city but Mississippi and Alabama not producing anybody outside of KRIT and Rich Boy is very surprising

With the black presence in these places it's surprises me that they're underrepresented in hip-hop
Gucci Mane from Bessemer
Montgomery, AL had Dirty
jackson, MIssissippi had David Banner

One word: GOGO

Rap has only been the most popular genre in DC for about 6 years. GOGO Dominated the music scene for about 4 decades here.

Nobody wanted to be a rapper in the 80's/90's/2000's. As soon as gogo died off amongst the youth...you started seeing rappers from the city pop up that were hittin nationwide
