One word: GOGO

Rap has only been the most popular genre in DC for about 6 years. GOGO Dominated the music scene for about 4 decades here.

Nobody wanted to be a rapper in the 80's/90's/2000's. As soon as gogo died off amongst the youth...you started seeing rappers from the city pop up that were hittin nationwide

Boutta say, all we had was Southeast slim, Tabi Bonney and wale fr. I stay in MD and grew up on gogo and west coast (mostly Bay Area) rap. If we wanted rap we had to beat on lockers, desks, lunch tables and freestyle, and it was usually to a pocket. And most gogo bands had a rapper or someone who could freestyle. But you didn't have to be that good cuz you weren't the focus.

For as many black people that are in DC and Maryland, that they have very few rap artists is surprising

Baltimore comes down to the crab mentality. You wont find a city with more haters per square mile. Also the club music scene here is kind g among the DJs. You go to other cities and new artist are being broke by DJs. Clubs here play mostly the local club music and only set aside a certain time for hip hop. So they only play the current hot shyt nationally. Theres always been a ton of rappers here tho and a lot are nice

Every nikka say this about their city

By this I mean, what cities do you imagine would have a larger presence in hip-hop by making waves on national scale but never really did? If you're from there, feel free to post some material of the local acts and perhaps explain why nobody or just one or two artists popped hard enough (label politics, hood politics, crab in a barrel mentality, etc).

For me I'd say;
D.C. (outside of Wale)
Baltimore
Boston (outside of Guru, Statik Selectah and...Benzino :skip:)
Cleveland (I don't know anybody outside of BTNH but that may be my ignorance)
Not a city but Mississippi and Alabama not producing anybody outside of KRIT and Rich Boy is very surprising

With the black presence in these places it's surprises me that they're underrepresented in hip-hop

dig deeper into alabama bro, great regional scene in huntsville with a ton of seriously slept on , one of a kind talent, and possibly the goat unknown producers the block beattaz

For the amount of black people out here I'm surprised someone from Delaware hasn't popped yet, then again I don't think people outside the east know this place exists

i always wondered why the fukk DC didn't have a bigger scene. i dont think i could name one rapper :ehh:

Historically, it wasn't a rap city. You can throw a stone in every direction in Philly & hit a bunch of mixtape rappers. Can't say the same about DC. The music culture there was Go-Go but, the younger generation (under 27) has started to appreciate rap music more and more and Go-Go is starting to become more of their parents generation's music kinda like how G-Funk was the music West Coast rappers' parents listened to and it ended up influencing their rap albums. You got Logic, Fat Trel, Shy Glizzy, Goldlink, Wale. Logic & Wale aren't really respected there, they have nationwide appeal with hipsters & white kids but, not in DC. You'll catch kids listening to Fat Trel or Shy Glizzy before anything.
