Update: I left my $100k/yr IT job in DC to start a business down in Louisiana last July.

As a dude from the DMV who left an 80k a year job and a 20k a year side business to come ALL the way out here to Qatar to make that same 80k TAX FREE, I agree with you 1000%, that's why I left and wont be returning, the quality of life in DC is EXAUSTING, the traffic, the insane amount of cops and speed traps, the "fake bougie black folk to the real bougie white folk :pacspit: all that shyt

I went to HU which is the farming system for the next generation of bougie buppies (amazing school though) so I feel you on the bolded

I still like Washington but, the bougieness and fake people was something I found blisteringly annoying. Everytime I visited my cousin in Baltimore, I noted how much more real and down to earth people were there vs. people in DC, which is funny because Baltimore is an absolute shyt hole.

Hampton or Howard? and :pacspit: Baltimore too, that's a shady ass group of people.. but the downtown area is really nice.. I am not saying DC doesn't have its pluses, its just the things I didn't like or was just tired of trying to ignore.. There are a lot of cool spots downtown if you are into the club scene tho

For all of you who remembered, i'd been working in DC in the IT field for 10 years making good money. I had saved up a lot of money and I was tired of the DC work scene and decided to move to Louisiana to be near my family and maybe start a business. I made the move this past July. As far as the business, it was too risky, hard to find a good location and money just isn't flowing well here at all. Honestly you need a team of people (investors) to help you start a business if possible. It's a lot to alone, but possible. I still have aspiration of starting a business someday, but I'll wait til an opportunity presents itself instead of trying to force it.

After months of trying to start a business, I fell back on that and started travelling the world and the US. Went to Turkey, France and Germany, DC about 5 times and to Atl a few times. I been eating and spending frivolously. With that said, I've seen my savings lose about 30k in the past 8 months. Most of that was for my business venture. Fukk it i guess. I still have a good amount left, but it's time to get back on the grind.

I start teaching middle school tomorrow, i'm taking a big pay cut, but at least I won't using my savings. I'm going to give this a try for a month or so. If it doesn't work out well, I'm might be heading back to DC to stack up some more money and go back at it.

Thing is, I was miserable in DC and I had to leave to see what was what. When you aren't happy you have to try something to change you thoughts and feelings. I still don't like the DC vibe, but I might have to go back for the money.

City wise, Baltimore is a shyt hole but, the people I met there were cool, girls were cool. Everybody there more seemed laid back than the rat race runners back in DC. I obviously wasn't venturing too far into the neighborhoods though  I was moreso chilling with law school and grad school students and people who lived downtown

At least you took that risk and tried. Most don't. Yeah seems kind of sketchy right now for you, but you seem like a hustler so you will be alright. I just don't understand why you want to go back to DC if you DON'T like it. That can't be the only place for good IT paying jobs.

I left Miami three months ago. I started to really really hate it. Although I have tons of friends there and I'm going to miss the cheap flights to the surrounding countries. I would never move back.

Louisiana is actually in a little economic boom at the minute. They just got multiple government contracted LNG plants built there and the Governor created a tax credit system where the entertainment industry receives major breaks for filming there. (If you were wondering why so many major sporting events, movies, and tv shows are being filmed in Louisiana recently this is why)

Texas never really had a recession when the housing market collapsed and being so close to Texas brings in a lot of tourism to Louisiana. 3 major casinos have been opened here in the last 5 years. Oil production and development here has also increased the last 5 years. It wasn't as bad a look as many are making out here.

Sorry your business venture didn't work out breh.

Out here in my damn drawls
we need to stop preaching "do what you love"from young

Actually, we don't do that enough, IMO.

I can't even count how many times I heard friends and classmates say "I might just have to go to law school :francis:" around graduation.

Schools should encourage passion, but it's hard with to cater to individual skill-sets when dealing slack parents, clueless/bought state officials, terrible administrators, bad teachers and too many students in a classroom

Start a business in Detroit. You won't regret it. Real, talk. Live downtown if you're single or in the suburbs if you have a family.
