Update: I left my $100k/yr IT job in DC to start a business down in Louisiana last July.

DC is a bland, stale and soulless city full of type A professionals. People aren't real. People are real siddity here. It's hard to make real romantic connections. It's hard to meet real people in terms of just friendship. Everybody is about their career, networking and advancing. Mostly because people in DC are transient by nature; in the city for college, graduate school, government job, campaign work, lobbying, politics. The idea is just to come here, get a career and bounce. So they could care less about anything that doesn't involve that. DC is a one trick pony town. Politics and government. Imagine if New York was full of nothing but, Wall Street people. No starving artists, musicians, writers, publishers, fashion models, night club owners, journalists and editors, engineers, programmers, architects, lawyers, other corporate employees. Just a city full of boring investment bankers. That's D.C. Cities like NYC and LA have people from all walks of life there.

So we gonna compare a small ass city like DC to NYC or LA and it's surrounding areas?:heh:

DC the city itself is what you described, but the surrounding areas are full of different and diverse communities full of shyt to do:banderas:

I don't live in DC, I live in MD, work in DC but there's always shyt for my fam to do.
And if you're a single dude in DC, you're fukking outnumbered by beautiful women all over the place :steviej:. If you can't get fukking play, then that's a "you" problem:heh:
How this dude, single, making 6 figures, in DC couldn't be happy is :mindblown:

you gave it less than a year's time though. i don't know the specifics of your business but it seems like a year's investment seems too little to judge whether or not the venture was worthwhile. but i'm glad you got to travel, that's like the next best thing to do with money, use it to take you places...

You ever thought of doing six-nine month contracts and chilling the rest of the year.

For all of you who remembered, i'd been working in DC in the IT field for 10 years making good money. I had saved up a lot of money and I was tired of the DC work scene and decided to move to Louisiana to be near my family and maybe start a business. I made the move this past July. As far as the business, it was too risky, hard to find a good location and money just isn't flowing well here at all. Honestly you need a team of people (investors) to help you start a business if possible. It's a lot to alone, but possible. I still have aspiration of starting a business someday, but I'll wait til an opportunity presents itself instead of trying to force it.

After months of trying to start a business, I fell back on that and started travelling the world and the US. Went to Turkey, France and Germany, DC about 5 times and to Atl a few times. I been eating and spending frivolously. With that said, I've seen my savings lose about 30k in the past 8 months. Most of that was for my business venture. Fukk it i guess. I still have a good amount left, but it's time to get back on the grind.

I start teaching middle school tomorrow, i'm taking a big pay cut, but at least I won't using my savings. I'm going to give this a try for a month or so. If it doesn't work out well, I'm might be heading back to DC to stack up some more money and go back at it.

Thing is, I was miserable in DC and I had to leave to see what was what. When you aren't happy you have to try something to change you thoughts and feelings. I still don't like the DC vibe, but I might have to go back for the money.

DC work life is terrible. I get on the train 5x a week and see everyone look like zombies:francis:

Cali and NYC gotta be my next spots to move too

Everyone in DC seems to be on that "frat bro" or uppity black thing

I'm just gonna put this here...

Man you better start looking for another job FAST AND ASAP...
If not this won't end well for you, you are about to watch your savings slowly deplete...
You needed to have a hustle IN MIND and IN PLACE before you quit your day job...
You my friend have jumped out the plane with no parachute...

Naw Stunts you got it all wrong...
I just feel like you jumped out a plane without a parachute or a real plan...
By all means start your own biz, but you should have DONE THAT when you had a CASH FLOW coming in...
But yea it's the internet so it's slim chances you will be man enough to come back in 6 month to a year and tell me I was right...

I find it hard to believe that with 10 years experience in IT and a verified TS clearance that you are having a hard time finding a job ANYWHERE. Yeah it's going to be some companies saying you are over qualified for some things or they can't afford you but someone would pay you more than what you would receive as a middle school teacher. Also in your last thread I told you to advertise on a site such as Thumbtack and you could build your business from the grassroots. Seems like you really don't have much passion for the IT field :manny: but good luck and do you bro.

DC, The Hollywood for Ugly People, is too expensive and full of Arlington hipsters from Virginia State Colleges. Or boughetto black Marylanders from military homes and govt workers. You should relocate to San Diego. Diversity, good food, attractive, friendly and fit people. Still has a military presence with the Navy too and a great place for young professionals. I dont think I could settle in the South East.

It wasn't about having an elaborate plan. I didn't have time to plan something great. I had to make a move out of DC regardless. I was sick of DC, sick of IT sick of my lifestyle there. I was being wreckless, I almost fukked off my career.

I don't regret any on my decisions bruh. I needed this rejuvenation.

It's ok I remember that thread before and myself other posters warned you that owning a business is no game. Here's what you should do, get your old job back, make a healthy living save for retirement, retire in 40 years and call it a day.
