So Iceland has dumb Ass amounts of athletes to choose from
Iceland spends every sports dollar it has on soccer. Iceland is playing 11 mutherfukkers who beat out 200,000 other soccer obsessed mutherfukkers. The US is fielding 11 guys who grew up when soccer was still a niche sport and were born before the US even had a pro league.

Point being, In icelands kids grow up kicking a soccer ball in the street. The most physically exceptional human beings in iceland play soccer. If you are American and you have exceptional foot work, hand eye coordination, and balance you are playing football or basketball period and if you are a midwestern cac youre playing baseball or hockey.

I lived in Japan and kids would be dribbling a soccer ball up the road the same way Steph Curry probably never left his house without a basketball.

Its the same reason Lithuania is a basketball power, they are basketball obsessed.

Until you see pick up soccer games in the street, America will be average no matter how much you talk about coaching, funding and development.

The best athlete argument is stupid on many fronts, doesn't need to be addressed.

USA wants to keep its football like it's NFL QBs, lily white, it'll always be a sub standard as a result.

Playing amateur level here in the UK (and most of the world) is a case of a nominal sign on fee (£20-40) & then £2-£5 per game. The US system necessitates paying $000s just to play one season. It systematically alienates black & Hispanic kids & as such you're left with a situation where a country of 400million people has a mediocre player such as Landon Donovan as one of its goats.

It won't change either as it's by design. That bs MLS with no relegation/promotion doesn't help either.

Bingo! Now picture if all those 5'10" and down guys with those same traits, who won't make it in those same sports due to to their height and size, were instead trained in the technicality and fundamentals of soccer. If we can somehow convince those type of kids at a young age to play and enjoy soccer we would be better off then we are now but, my only concern is that this current shytty ass system (which is already negating most of our talent as it is) will either hamper their full potential or completely ignore them if they can't financially support their clubs. There is so much that needs to change starting with ussf down to the grass roots in this country.

A pro/rel system in MLS, NASL etc would not work how it would in other countries(besides holding owners and players more accountable) because of the US geography and it could destroy parity completely, which is what the average US sports fan likes. Also soccer isn't no where near popular enough like it is in other countries for it to succeed.

I disagree, countries with a fraction of the support have been multiple tiers of football with relegation & promotion.

As for the geography point, that is very valid however one easily remedied by having divisional conferences. We do that here for the lower leagues to save on travel times/costs.

If the teams are in the same area then yeah that wouldn't be a problem but, I still don't think this is a good idea because it's so alien to the average American sports fan. I could be wrong though.

You obviously don't if you're still on the "best athletes" nonsense
Youre right. Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandoski, ect arent great athletes

They are just like you and me, just well coached and practiced dribbling alot.:mjlol:

oh lord, you don't even understand the argument youre making

let me ask you, who under most measures is the better athlete, Gyasi Zardes or Neymar? Now ask yourself whos the better footballer?

In terms coordination, balance, touch, and recognition obviously Neymar. You dont believe athleticism is just how fast you are or how high you can jump?

You think Neymar developed his skill from coaching or the streets?

Handball? Hockey? Winter sports?

To say that Iceland allocates all their sporting resources to soccer is simply false.

Also there are definitely soccer-obsessed markets in the US, particularly among African immigrants and non-Caribbean latinos.

Soccer is more about technique and less about athleticism. Only forwards and wingers really need athleticism
(as well as fullbacks). The best midfielders have been non-athletes like Xavi, Pirlo, Zidane etc. Even with athleticism you still need the technique, otherwise you'd be fielding teams with a bunch of Theo Walcott's. The US has never even produced a forward the calibre of Walcott by the way...maybe Landon Donovan.

Are you forgetting the likes of Eddie Johnson? The athlete argument is trivial.

:mjlol: soccer is the most popular sport in Iceland easily.

Comparatively if i tried to talk soccer in my office people would think im on dope.

Lavar Ball is a bigger story in America than the US missing the world cup

And once again youre equating running and jumping with athleticism. Where in touch, vision, recognition, balance and coordination are not learned but genetic. If you are born with those in America you are playing Basketball, Football, Baseball or Hockey before you even think about getting into soccer.
