The US deserved to miss it. Jurgen lost his way towards the end but in general he was trying to set up the US for a better future. But people wanted to bytch and complain because he wasn't an MLS dikkrider who insisted on all his best players playing in the 34th best league in the world or some shyt. Soccer is the 1 sport the US isn't the best at and they can't just admit it and try to follow the systems of countries that are the best.
Its just another example of the US not being to get out of its own way. The pay for play shyt is a joke and they have it that way to keep the teams full of "tough, gritty" cacs. If they actually went to find the best players all over america you'd probably have a team full of mexican americans and cacs can't have that

Jurgen sucked as a coach, (USMNT & Bayern Munich) but he had a vision that in the long run would have been beneficial to American soccer. I wish he could have stayed on board as a director for the USSF. If it was up to me I'd hire Tab Ramos as the interim head coach. Currently overseas the U-20 team. So he knows the next crop of young American players. Let him work and build with them while we play meaningless games until 2019. I can't see any quality coach being available until after the 2018 World Cup anyways. No reason to rush this coaching job and get it wrong.

The problem is the USA is a very loose confederation of personal fifedoms.
Individuals don't have as much power as you all think. It's not centralized at all and people are just trying to get into college instead of pro careers.
