University of Texas football players say they will not participate in recruiting or donor events unless a list of demands aimed at racial justice are met

The University of Texas football team has reportedly submitted a list of demands to the University of Texas administration, and they say they won't participate in any recruitment activities or donor events unless those demands are met. They will, however, continue to practice and play.

The demands have been placed on Twitter by at least two University of Texas football players, and reportedly they are submitted on behalf of the entire team, although there is not yet an indication that the entire team has signed on to the demands or whether there are any dissenting voices.

Defensive lineman/linebacker Marqez Bimage was one of the players who shared the demands on Twitter.

The first demand is that certain buildings on campus be renamed, including buildings named after famous former University of Texas professors and administrators who were open segregationists like Theophilus Painter and Robert Lee Moore. The document also demands the permanent removal of the statue of former Texas Gov. James Hogg, which has been a source of controversy for years.

The document also called for additional support for racial justice issues on campus, education for incoming freshmen about the history of racism on campus, and for a portion of the proceeds of the athletics department to be donated to "black organizations and BLM movements." The document also demands that the university name "some part of the stadium after Julius Whittier (the first black football player at UT."

The document also demands that the university "Get rid of 'The Eyes of Texas' and have a new song written for us to sing. Do not require athletes to sing the song."

The fight song, "The Eyes of Texas," has been criticized as having had racist origins.

As of the writing of this article, University of Texas officials had not responded publicly to the athletes' demands.

You won't have to do this at Texas Southern but I am glad to see they are using their power.

You can't go into somebody house and start moving furniture.

Take yout talents to an HBCU
You goddamn right they can make requests. They are paying the mortgage With their sweat without even the decency of getting you a salary. These kids are starting to realize their immense power of unified.

I honestly feel like college and the educational system in general is damaging to the black mission. I think instead they should be seeking ways to not need to attend college at all to achieve their goals.

Though I will say being able to get endorsements is a step in the right direction.

:mjlol: What? They think ending donor/recruiting events is a demand?

Them Northwestern boys told you to unionize

Them Missouri boys told you to walk out on the team

Those are the only 2 actual power moves student athletes have within a collegiate white supremacist institution.
truth

Sir, how can you threaten to end recruiting events while still playing games that attract recruits?

What attracts recruits and increases undergraduate enrollment more than a successful, winning football program?

You're not changing building names or removing confederate statues without students on campus willing to put their bodies on the line and careers in jeopardy (see UNC and the Silent Sam debacle). They'll give you a black athlete history exhibit for peanuts. It means nothing to them because they'll ensure the message it conveys is one of unity between white and blacks.

If the athletes are truly "in this together" then they can unionize. Put it up to a vote. If you can't even unionize.......

The University of Wisconsin is the center of resistance against conservatism and republicans in the state of Wisconsin, to my knowledge they don't have any buildings named after slave owners, no slave songs, and they still can't break 3% in black student enrollment. At Penn State we literally named our most visited building after a black communist and we still have to deal with the same shyt as Texas students. The Maryland state flag, which is worn by UMD, is an homage to a slave owner.

Why doesn't anyone ask those who fought this fight what real change looks like?
more truth

But it's a big step in the right direction that these athletes are finally leveraging all the power they own. These are young brothers, many of them still in their teens, stepping in the fire and catching heat (see below) from the fans so I'm not going to nitpick at what they're trying to do.
they arent though and @tru_m.a.c pointed that out. if they wanted to guarantee they get everything they demanding, they would refuse to play.

but your last point is appreciated. lets just not act like they playing their most powerful move

HBCUs dont need to be in the business of big time college football. College football leaves 90% of their schools in the red beyond power 5. An HBCU gets into it, they pass on those losses onto the students and watch that school become gentrified.

hell no.
