The identity of formerly enslaved people is something that has always been unsettled in this nation, when I was younger, we were "Afro Americans", we've collectively settled on Black to identify as at this point in time.

You're proud to call yourself Black, are you proud to call yourself a n*gga?
Proud to call myself a nikka? No.

Proud that I share a lexicon with my identifying group and one of those words is nikka... Honestly, yes.

They referred to each other by tribe/religious affiliation/region. Black is OUR 'tribe' since we lost all connection to them.

We have different culture, values, philosophies, languages, etc., than Zulu, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, etc. due to diverging histories from 400+ years of separation.

'Black' isn't ONLY derogatory regardless as to how Europeans used it.

'N1gger/n1gga' is and always will be.

What made it NOT derogatory? It's origin was devious and hostile in nature. I believe you and I don't see it as derogatory because we are many more years removes from the first moments black was beginning to be accepted as okay by us.

Well, this isn't really true. It's subjective. Much like black or negro. If, we as a group, normalized it, it creates avenues for it to NOT be derogatory based on context.

Just like black.

Respect.

I use nikka freely among friends and in comfortable circles
But now that i'm thinking about it I don't think I ever just called a random black dude in the grocery store a nikka before
I'd probably say some variation of man/dawg/OG etc
Don't know how familiar spears and willie D is but i guess it ain't that familiar if he didn't know how Willie D felt so he shouldn't have addressed him like that :manny:

What made it NOT derogatory?
The fact that it is a color meaning 'life', 'fertility', 'masculinity', 'maturity', age, and 'renewal' among the SAME cultures/people that were enslaved.

Exactly, it's a degenerative word.

the best part about a place like the coli is we can let the data bear out how it's used here (since every instance of it is logged) and I'd wager that more often than not, it's used pejoratively.

The N-word is still very prevalent in the lexicon. If I listen to a new song and repeatedly hear it in the first minute I click it off. I won't let it pollute my brain and consciousness. Just yesterday someone made a thread on Rick Ross benching and the slave word flew out of his mouth several times in the short clip. I cringed but realize although he's very successful he has Mississippi roots where the capital City of Jackson (majority Black population) had a major potable/drinking water problem because of the state siphoning off resources for an former NFL quarterback.

Willie D. is a national treasure for his thoughts and efforts and for checking that NYC c/o/o/n. I have roots in the city (Harlem, Williamsburg, Coney Island, Flatbush, Bay Ridge) and Fairfield County going back over 100 years so that's why I chastise Mr. Spears like that. I ain't forget about that skit that he and Tiffany Haddish made involving a child that bordered on abuse.

KRS-One has a classic bar on the topic.

I don’t let anyone including black people call me that in person either.. As an adult it sounds dumb and it makes you sound dumber if you use it. That’s just the facts.

Aries called him nikka like 4 times in 15 seconds. I’m sure if he only said it once it wouldn’t have mattered.

I don’t even get mad when black folks use towards me, I just don’t really respond because my brain isn’t wired to respond to that phrase, because I’m not stricken with the “disease.”
