I mean if I walked into a music store back in the day I'd go to the R&B section to find them, but I think people are saying in the bigger sense of hip-hop culture.

I get this and I agree. Missy is a whole different subject since she actually raps and is more of a hybrid artist, but I have no problem saying Mary J Blige is “hip hop” in that broader cultural context. But if I have to put her in a box, I’m putting her in the R&B box, and I think most would agree with that. She’s not a rapper and I wouldn’t think of her as a hip hop artist since those terms are somewhat synonymous and used interchangeably. I wouldn’t think of What’s The 411 as a classic rap album.

Hip-hop as a culture is bigger than just rhyming words, and just because those artists sing instead of rap, that doesn't make them not hip-hop to me.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I still consider rapping to be a foundational characteristic of hip hop music. So if your musical output is all singing, or 99% singing, like Mary, I’m fine saying she’s “hip hop” in that broad cultural context, but she’s in a different category than Rakim. Or even someone like Nelly.

I’m saying Nicki can still be hip hop when she’s making a crossover hit that resonates with a completely different audience, because Super Bass still felt like hip hop, and because Nicki’s come up was hip hop as fukk.

Nah, rappers chasing pop fame, label politics such as formulaic albums, people caring about the beat over the lyrics, and lack of gatekeepers to an extent have eroded hip hop.

These are all great points. You could trace chasing pop fame and formulaic albums back to Bad Boy and Big and going commercial by getting an R&B singer to sing the hook on your record, but i absolutely agree that you can’t just reduce the fall of hip hop to one factor.
