I don't think crossover between R&B and hip-hop killed traditional hip-hop at all.

I think it got killed by formulas, chasing trends, everyone being allowed in, corporations cashing in on it, the globalization and gentrification of it, etc.

I don't think Mary J on records with Jay or Big did anything close to hurting traditional hip-hop.
I hear you, but I think the pursuit of commercial records in the mid 90s with the formula of an R&B singer on the hook opened the door for traditional hip hop to see its exit. Not that there hadn’t been an element of that all along. It’s complicated and can’t be reduced to one single factor.

What is Mary's unofficial title?

"The Queen of ......................."

She rapped on her first album.

I hear your point, and partially agree, but how would you categorize The FORCE M.D.s. As you know, they were on the scene in the original era of hip hop as the FORCE MCs.

There’s definitely a lot of gray area. No doubt. Beyond them, you got Bone, Domino and Nate Dogg. Nate Dogg wasn’t considered a rapper in the 90s, but if he dropped today, he 100% would be considered a rapper. Doing the exact same thing. shyt done changed.

Y’all are in here arguing this shyt as though the reason the Dips got washed is because their catalog is nowhere near the Lox’s, when that wasn’t the case at all. The Lox won because of their PERFORMANCE and ENERGY, and the fact they were so much better prepared than the Dips were. The actual music was low key an afterthought in a way. I mean, Jada’s old freestyles got more love than Cam’s biggest hits lol.

Calling those artist hip hop is about being part of hip hop culture, not specifically the hip hop/rap music genre
Seems this whole conversation was just a misunderstanding because I agree with it framed that way

Exactly. At a time when every MC within a hip hop crew was to have bars.

Dip Set was loved by outta towners more than by New Yorkers and represent New York fell off rap yet were still relevant. Look at the design of their crew. It's all swag rap. They can't spit.
I’m assuming you’re mainly talking Santana and Jones here?? Because I don’t think an argument can be made that Cam isn’t a spitter. You could argue that his personality overshadowed it though I guess.

You mentioned the about the era’s and it’s so true.

Dips probably used to performing at concerts at their peak and the crowd chanting all their lines and not paying attention to them being wack performers.

Cam said something telling early on that let me know they were fukked and weren’t built for last night

He said to the Lox “this ain’t SOB’s” he was trying to use it as a slight but it was basically saying we ain’t here to rock a crowd like we’re still some hungry up and coming artists.
Pretty much this is what it was. Cam saw this shyt as a check, Jada and them saw this as an opportunity and a challenge.

A better DJ. Better Audio and more cohesion in the performance and this could have been closer. Still would have the Lox taking it. But the monster records the dips got didn’t always translate cuz of either the DJ teasing records, not in sync or the performance and audio was shaky
