I was speaking of something like the 2 year deal Houston was offering him with a team option for the second year. So essentially it’s a 1 year deal at $21 million. If he doesn’t return to form (he likely won’t) then let him walk. If he does, then pick up the option.

It’s essentially a 1 year gamble for some team who has cap space but no one to spend it on.

Understood, but when has a team offered an aging, injury-prone guard reliant on athleticism that kind of contract in free agency? Unfortunately he’s probably looking at the MLE.

This isn’t your normal free agency as teams will have cap space, but no one to spend it on.

It’s the same reason why John Collins is likely looking at close to a max extension when he wouldn’t in any normal free agency year. The same John Collins with no defined position on defense and can’t create offense without being assisted.

Understood but teams with cap space saw how Brooklyn acquired assets from 2016-19. Take on bad contracts that include draft picks. That’s a smarter move than signing Vic to $20M+ deal.

If Zo is getting 20m, I could still see Vic getting like 13-15

Even that is predicated on hoping his offense isn’t shot

John Collins is 23 years old, put up 21/10 this year and 18/8 this year with no significant injury history.

This will be the 2nd time in 2 years he's had surgery on the same quad and will be 30 years old, at the earliest, before he plays again. When's the last time he's looked solid?

Don't let the numbers fool you. John Collins isn't anywhere close to the max. He's going to get close to it though as there aren't any free agents out there worthwhile.

With it being likely of Dipo being out for the 2022 season he's not going to get a contract offered from anyone. Someone will take a flyer on him when he's healthy as it'd be a low risk, potential high reward.
