The fan contest was a good idea
The concept pitched wasnt bad (juxtaposing the crime life in old arabian movies with NYC era crime life )
But the execution was off, which is a shame considering Jason Goldwatch is there to monitor it and he makes decent low budget videos
Seems like the idea wasnt about making a proper video but just a visiual piece. Had they decided to make a proper video with a cast and everything for that contest it would have been dope

This is what won the contest? Don't get me wrong, incorporating the film from the sample was cool but NaS should of taken back to the HOOD with this video. I mean "REPRESENT". He should been in the boro's with all the n!ggas with Premo too. This should of a Hood video to represent that era of "ILLmatic". Props to the guy that won but that's not that great of a concept to me.
Yeah bro, i was expecting some dirty queens bridge projects hennys and fortys all over the video.

I think people would appreciate it more after watching the BTS video where the director explains his vision

This is a glorified fan video from a joint Nasir did 20 years ago.... Of COURSE they weren't going to go "all out". It's a nice companion piece to remember from the year that was the Illmatic appreciation period.

Flipside to that is that it seems like the generic thing to do and people would say Nas is still holding on to that era. Like I said, I think the concept was dope and the use of the sample as well...but the execution felt lazy cause they did it not like a proper music video.
Imagine if they did all that but with the same sense of urgency, it would have just looked like a smack dvd video
