These super high profile musicians have such tight schedules its not surprising they'd do coke or (something similar) just to not be lagging by the time they have to do the actual performance.
Just imagine being jet lagged as hell and you have a radio appearance at 6 in the morning, another one at 8, go speak at a school around noon, an in-store at 2, sound check from 5-7 and then finally the performance at 9 pm. Could also have recording time in between there. Even if that is your day-to-day routine, theres gonna be off days.
Not admirable, but also understandable.
