man this was the dunk contest after it had been on hiatus for a few years, and I'll be dammed if it didn't deliver. definitely the BEST dunk contest I had ever seen. I dont think I was watching bball back when MJ was in it.

VC, T-Pain, and Francis all brought it that year. and them not missing dunks just made it that much better.

Almost everyone knew VC was gonna win before it started, but you gotta give props to T-Pain and Francis, cuz almost ANY other year, they would have won hands down.

That first dunk was absolutely incredible.

EVERYONE was like :ohhh: as it happened live

:ohhh: during the slow motion replay

:whoo: during another replay at full speed

rinse and repeat 5x...

stackhouse knew he was finished...he could have jumped from the 3 point line and nobody would have cared.

The whole crowd went crazy and I have yet till this day see all the NBA players lose it like they did.

Mutumbo raised his hand to god
Shaq looked like he saw the ice cream truck approaching
Ray Allen lost control of his body for a second
KG had to get up from his seat, Webber had to hold on to him

It was one of the greatest moments in anything sports related in my life.

man, I remember seeing that first dunk like it was yesterday. VC walked in there all non-chalant and proceeded to do a 360 windmill while spinning the WRONG way which made the dunk that much harder. plus he damn near did it off vert. I was like :mindblown: right there. :ohlawd:

Watching that live, just something I'll never forget. Especially being a Raps fan :wow:
Everyone showed out, and the crowd reaction and player reaction is what made it even more memorable.

Vince's dunks, while not the most difficult were just a thing of beauty. Clean, full extension, smooth and downright powerful. :ohlawd:

That's my (then) 1/2 man 1/2 amazing :to:

You couldn't tell that dude he wasn't going to win convincingly after his very first step onto the court that day. I pretty much sat with the :damn: on the whole event. I mean a windmill 360 basically off a straight leap, come on man, shyt even ain't fair

Ironic thing that I took away from re-watching this:

Only 2 of the people from this dunk contest are still in the league.

The winner...

:win:

...and the most unfortunate guy in the contest:

Also, like everyone said, it definitely seemed like a great time for the league. That particular All-Star weekend was just dope overall. Aside from VC killing the dunk contest, I'll always remember it for this:

I remember I saw that shyt when I was a kid and going :whoo: ...ended up trying to pull it off outside while playing with my friends. Remember that? Being a kid...seeing shyt on TV and going outside to try it.

Anyway, I put the blame on the whole 24-hour sports journalism thing and shows like "First Take" for why stars are afraid to enter the dunk contest nowadays. Back then, no one was talking about "your legacy" as much and putting graphics on the screen of irrelevant stats while trying to sync your career with Jordan. If Vince Carter had done the dunk contest in this day and age, they'd have approach :mjpls: for comments while showing "MJ vs VC" side-by-side stats and videos after every dunk. There's just no chill nowadays.

while not the most difficult :

That first dunk had enough difficulty that it made the others look weaker by comparison

1) He spun the wrong way. This is already completely unnatural feeling and just simply doing a reverse spin 360 on its own is hard enough

2) He did a full extension windmill with a palmed ball. Once again, just doing this on its own is hard enough. The grip strength and air time and arm speed have to be high

Combining the two is otherworldly. And doing so with such finesse and power is not even believable. This is a video game dunk, probably the best in the history of the dunk contest. Every single part of his body is moving AWAY from the rim at the time he puts it in. The timing is barely possible. And he did it in ONE try and made it look effortless.

He made it look so effortless that it is possible to take it for granted.

Jason Williams ELBOW PASS!!!!!!!!!!! - YouTube

I used to do that Jason Williams pass in high school basketball practice all the time. I was even going to do it in a game once, but I never got into a situation where I had a proper fast break and we had a big enough lead that I wouldn't get benched for trying it.

I used to practice that Allen Iverson one every day, but could never get it feeling smooth. Then I saw a dude try to do it the next All Star weekend (probably the rookie game) and he got the ball stolen from him and I never tried it again

I remember recording this on VHS back in the day.. I prolly still got it somewhere..

Vince's first dunk is my favorite of all time..

Is this the last dunk contest that didn't feature mostly scrubs?

That's probably it. I just found the ones J-Rich did to be alot more difficult, but also alot more sloppy. If Vince were to have done the bounce-through the legs-reverse that Richardson did :ohlawd:
