He obviously found more of a balance in the sound of this album. It's different than Summertime and BFT, sonically it's mix of his older stuff and his newer material.

:mjlol: @ you honestly thinking there wasn't any criticism for BFT.

He's expressed that he wanted to get away from making shyt that sounded too hood/gangster cause it didn't translate well with his audience at the places he was performing. On FM!, not only is he talking some gangster shyt, he's doing it on more upbeat/tempo records... which goes back to my first line about him finding a balance with what he wants to talk about and the music he's spitting it on.
BFT is his most critically acclaimed project as I showed 2 pages back. It was received better than Summertime, and FM! is not as good as it, musically. The problem I am having is people calling the music he makes "cac music" because it has electronic/house influences in there, which originated from black people. I love that BFT was left field from his previous releases and that he did not repeat himself on there. People always want artists to repeat themselves over and over again, and not grow with every release. FM! is a fun project nonetheless and I enjoyed it just like his other albums. I felt that the back and forth because of me calling BFT a great album was unnecessary.

I’m not with this.

At all.

You complain about people who want lyricism, content and concepts then complain about albums like BFT?

How about the people who automatically equate different to good. Different isn’t always good. Unique means not like others, not better than others. Doing something different is to be commended, but if it doesn’t work to the ears or eyes of some people that stands.

The same kinda people who say shyt like you said are the same kinda people who used to prop up any random underground emcee in the early to mid 2000s as the antidote to mainstream rap music but in hindsight (or more specially, if you take off your bias) the MUSIC they made wasn’t good.

nikkas who would tell you Elohim Marino, Papoose or Immortal Technique made better music than [INSERT MAINSTREAM RAPPER] because they had bars or a message.

And this coming from someone who really likes Vince, trolling and all, and wants him to win. I think we need more people who think and express themselves like him in rap TBH, but that doesn’t mean that when I put on Crabs in a Bucket it only gets good when the beat really drops and Kilo Kish is singing/talking. Or the fact that Big Fish with Juicy J is by far and away the only song that had any kind of impact because it was structurally and sonically the best SONG on the album.

If you like BFT that’s cool. Rock out to it. I am a fan of a lot of stuff that some people wouldn’t be. My library can go from drumless loop Griselda rap to fukking Massive Attack to Hiatus Kaiyote.

But don’t be one of those people who equates having eclectic taste to having superior taste.

I'm not saying I have superior taste. All I'm saying is don't bytch about the state of rap and then get something dope like BFT and shyt on it just because he has techno/electric beats. Have an open mind before listening to music and the shyt will be a lot better.

Lol literally nobody who is anybody hated BFT or had any criticism about it

Lol besides motherfukkers who don't venture outside of basic mainstream Hip Hop and RnB
Exactly. I loved that BFT was left field from most of the rap music that's out there. There isn't enough venturing out within the genre and most of everything is sounding the same. That album is really what got me into Vince's music in the first place. I felt it was a breath of fresh air and very creative. Vince's flow was top notch over those beats as well.

No rap artist (or artist in general) out there should be confined to one sound. They should be able to progress and experiment. I see no problem with that at all.

BFT is his highest acclaimed album, so I'm confused as to what criticism that poster was referring to.

It was the best produced Hip Hop album

And that sound isn't even left field if you look at the overall musical soundscape the past 10 years

Hip Hop is always late because Hip Hop fans are too insular and less musically inclined...

All of Burial's stuff

Chromeo's stuff

Toro Y Moi's stuff

Old Flyiing Lotus

Yeezus

Saul Williams stuff

Azaela Banks stuff

Arca's stuff

Kelela's stuff

First 2 MIA albums

All of this came out the last 10 years...

BFT just got a more of a 80s Hip Hop influence

I feel you. I was kinda referring to rap albums in particular. Who else out now besides Azealia Banks is rapping over house production?

I was going to mention Yeezus in my post, but edited it because I was thinking that people would disagree. But yeah, it was the album that came to mind that I felt was kinda similar.

But what I meant is that it was left field for him, and just rap music in general.

I mean Chiddy Bang Bang, Spank Rock, early Wiz Khalifa, Theodious London, 100s, even Lil B was on a more electronic wave before Yeezus and BFT

All dope artists. I honestly wouldn’t mind more of the sound within the genre.
