Growing up going on road trips on 95 from NYC to visit family in NC, when 95 passes through downtown Richmond that feels like the start of the south to me.
I agree with the poster who said VA both an east coast and southern state, this applies every state 95 passes though south of VA as well. In another thread someone tried to argue that NC isn't the south
