Is he talking about music or geographic wise? Music wise, we were way more influenced by NYC/East coast music. Geographic wise, it's always been a weird debate for decades. At face value looking at the map we're definitely in the south but definitely doesn't feel like it though. You start getting that "southern vibe" more toward the south of VA entering NC. VA itself is split into 2, Northern VA is very different from Southern VA.

That's cause you're in Richmond, drive an hour west or south and then talk to people.

I live just outside of Richmond now but grew up in the southwest part of the state. I always considered VA southern.

But Virginia is kind in purgatory when it comes to region. I go down to Atlanta, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and I say im from VA, and local brehs say Im not from the south. Even had a dude in South Carolina say I sound like im from New York. :wtf:

But of course to cats from NYC, Philly, Jersey, etc, VA is the south and they say I have a country accent.

:mjlol:

DC nikkas pronounce the word area like 'urrea' and carry like 'curry' :dahell:

Drive a couple miles out in VA or MD and you still see confederate flags :beli:

DC is definitely the south
You must be a New York nikka, anything outside of NY is the south to them :dead:

You’ll see confederate flags in PA too, does that make it the south?

I was scanning this thread to see if this was mentioned to not be redundant

Even plantation slavery was in Detroit which abuts Canada

This is a result of the mythological public relations image and history games the US plays to falsely isolate that genocide and its after effects to a particular region. "Thats a problem with them"

This whole nation is socially and culturally "the south" in many fundamental respects.

"Up South" is a great recommended text on Philadelphia history

1000% facts, and thanks for the Book recommendation. It really shows what media and propaganda can do. Both scary and sad

And I find it hilarious this thread has multiple posts about the Civil War as "proof that slavery was only in the South", when one of the main reasons the Civil War started was more to do with the US wanting to fulfill the Manifest Destiny colonialization as they headed West. The main talking points was when each territory eventually became a State, would it become a Slave State or a Free State. It was around 1850 when Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, etc etc were all in debates if Slavery were to be legal there, because they needed "balance" in the Union of Slave vs Free states

Unless the Coli wants to say all those States I mentioned are part of the South, then by all means lol
