VA is an East Coast State and Texas is its own thing (not the South)

Technically the DMV, VA Beach and Norfolk are the North and the rest of the state is the south. Shout out to all the HBCUs in the VA. I spent time in the Tri-City 804 area.

There was slavery in New York, NJ, PA, and Massachusetts :gucci::childplease:

So are they considered the South?

I was scanning this thread to see if this was mentioned to not be redundant

Even plantation slavery was in Detroit which abuts Canada

This is a result of the mythological public relations image and history games the US plays to falsely isolate that genocide and its after effects to a particular region. "Thats a problem with them"

This whole nation is socially and culturally "the south" in many fundamental respects.

"Up South" is a great recommended text on Philadelphia history

The argument is asinine. Every state on the Atlantic coast is in the East. So yes, Virginia is in the East, it is also in the South. You can have more than one designation at a time.
I’m from NC been repping East Coast since I was a lil Breh..:blessed: people be like nah you from the South mf :what: I’m like it’s literally on the fuccing eastern coast of the ocean :mjcry:

Technically VA is southern (not part of the DEEP south) but if you consider the DMV as a sort of culturally cohesive area, the DMV isn't southern. Western VA and allat has a Southern feel to it but Richmond and coastal VA don't. Folks from Norfolk & RVA don't sound southern, either.

Anything south of north DC being the south is funny to me. It’s like calling anything west of Pennsylvania the west too. You can say former confederate state that doesn’t necessarily mean southern.

Stance in slavery 150 years ago can’t be the only definition, culture and geography has to matter in 2025.

That’s like saying Miami is not southern because of all the New Yorkers and Latinos

Virginia is the south, we can give up Wal-Markansas if we want to get rid of a state
I get the historical context of slavery but what do people who are from there say today? Is the only thing that makes the south the south the stance on slavery?

Like can I be in Washington DC or Jersey, take one step now the culture is southern? :jbhmm:

It's literally just like Native Americans being called Indians, just cause some cracker thought he came to India 400 years ago.

This reminds me of the situation with the state of Maryland, which, by and large, is the South; however, the city of Baltimore, culturally, is more East Coast.

The Wire, for example, Baltimore is in the South, but the city itself feels more like an East Coast city, the way people dress and act is more in tune with those up North.

The State of Virginia is without a doubt in the South, but maybe if he specifically pointed out a city, it would've made more sense, but then again, I don't know much about Virginia. I have a cousin (he's way older than me, in his late 40s, married with kids and shyt) from Lynchburg, VA although he was born in NYC and lived there until he was probably a teen and left with his mother when his father and her separated.

Can somebody please explain to me why you’d say Virginia ain’t the South? Does it look different than you think the South looks or something lol. Like I see people in here saying culturally… I mean I spend a lot of time in the Outer Banks and I could lie to myself and say they’re not the South, they’re just east coast( even though the banks are literally on the coast lol) People are bringing up actual confederacy history but folk don’t care.
