the 4'11 Cuban
Wrong...well not wrong...just misinformed.
1. Urban sprawl is a part of the main reason Detroit was left to crumble. That and a total divestment from the city by the surrounding areas. Mass Transit, jobs programs, etc. These are all regional things that could have easily stopped Detroit's decline. Chicago has participation from all its surrounding counties, same for most big cities...Detroit NEVER had that.
2. There are MANY areas of Detroit that a perfectly fine and isn't the fukking walking dead.
3. I moved downtown because yes, gentrification is in full effect, however, wasn't shyt there because black business owners were essentially frozen out of buying the land for decades...remember Don Barden and Micheal Jackson were a part of the consortium trying to bring the casinos here and make the black owned. They were denied. Also what the popular national media DOESN'T say is that black owned businesses are surging in Detroit. I actually ate three meals out on Saturday and they all were at black owned restaurants, my girl got her nails done at a black owned salon and I'm currently drinking coffee from a black owned cafe. All downtown (cept for the cafe...cuz its by my job)
4. Insurance for virtually everything costs EXPONENTIALLY more in Detroit....explain to me why certain people are paying in excess of $500/mo on CAR insurance...oh i know why. Because the Ford, GM and others lobbied too keep mass transit off the table thus FORCING people to get cars...and when car insurance is MANDATORY in Michigan...and Detroit is the population center....you get my drift.
What WAS done by black folks was...
1. Allowing police and fire to not have residency requirements. One of the largest, stable tax bases in the city pooof gone almost overnight.
2. Moving out to Oakland and Macomb county trying to keep up with white folks and now realizing that the infrastructure costs way more and FURTHER reducing the tax base.
3. Not supporting many of the black owned business that were there. nikkas love taking they ass out to Oakland county to spend they money.
4. Letting gentrification scare us into thinking we have no say in Detroit's future. All of the thriving neighborhoods have non-profit, business collectives that work to see the needs of a particular area and does their best to bring dollars to the area. This has happened in Midtown and Corktown and Mexicantown. However, other areas like Palmer Park, Brightmoor, Rosedale and others have either started or are making theirs.
You just summed up Michigan as a whole. They've probably done just as much harm as good to the economy here. When Granholm wanted to bring a Toyota plant up here, those UAW cacs acted a damn fool. Meanwhile Big Three plants were/are closing left and right.
And these law making cacs got nerve enough to say "Driving is a privilege, not a right." Bull fukking shyt
. Since we have shytty public transportation, that shyt is damn near a necessity now. How the fukk you expect to hold down a job with no car or at least an license? And don't get me started on that. The first thing they want to do is fukk with somebody's license. It don't matter if the crime was auto related or not.
Rep pending for both you brehs.
Socioeconomic systemic barriers are both fascinating and terrifying to me. Its something i wish more people were aware off because it shows just how far gone this country is.
