edit: but per the poll, voodoo. Brown sugar is a great album, but the highs on voodoo ascend those on BS and there’s more of a “spiritual” experience on voodoo - d’angelo, maxwell and erykah badu all made some god level music on their second albums, after putting out :fire: on the first, you could stick me with those 6 albums and I’d be :eat: the rest of my life.
I’m curious how you’d rank those 6? :jbhmm:

I’ve seen a lot of disrespect towards Maxwell these past few weeks on Twitter whenever people suggest a D’angelo and Maxwell versus. I’m more of a D’angelo fan but I can see it going either way.

I’d suspect people feel like maxwell is kinda like Jill Scott is to Erykah, you’ll get more “polished” music mainly about love, whereas d’angelo and Erykah are seen as grittier and more varied. I’ve got d’lo and maxwell on the same tier, but Erykah is above them all IMO (and we’re talking inches here as they’re all GREAT artists).

as for ranking, i could easily rearrange 4-6 depending on the day

If I had to go by which one gets the most burn, I've been heavy on Voodoo for the last 2 months. in fact over the years I keep revisiting that album more and more

Brown Sugar is part of the soundtrack to my childhood SO I cant front on it because it's a classic

to me though D'angelo transcended and became fully realized on Voodoo.

it boils down to preference. Both are classic with no skippable tracks

Chicken grease is my shyt, that's what I hear in my head when I walk in the room

There just something about capturing the moment an artist haves a creative renaissance or breakthrough, that's just special

Voodoo for me. It's close but voodoo was D at this most experimental and his artistry was just sublime. You can play that shyt start to finish and it's just a complete mood. "Send it on" is probably one of my top 3 songs of all time, would be the first song at my wedding I love it that much

Also remember when the CD came out reading the booklet as it had all the lyrics which were sometimes hard to decipher on first listen because he was playing around with his vocal more than he did on brown sugar

Good memories
