He hasn't been in control of his own career and he can't decide if he wants to make dope music or be a super star.

Interscope made him change his lead single and they tact Lady Gaga onto it (I know this first hand because his dikk head manager emailed me because I leaked his song)

He wasn't sure if he was a 'No Hands' guest appearance rapper or he wanted to make deeper songs like Lotus Fire Bomb.

The way he connected Seinfeld to this and put the concept together on the song was why I became a fan... I just smh at the corny shyt he chooses to release for the masses while suppressing his real creative shyt like this... he does it all the time too
:snoop:

This stuff didn't sell. He went gold with Lotus Flower Bomb. He dropped The Album About Nothing and it didn't sell well. He wants to be big and mainstream and cannot figure out what he's missing. He doesn't get how Cole can sell dropping whatever he wants but it doesn't work out that way for him. Guys like him and Sean get annoyed because they work hard to improve and it seems like Drake and Cole are stagnant but sell no matter what. Same goes for Kendrick. Wale wants to be big, and he doesn't get enough love for his pro-black shyt so hes like fukk it. His style is inconsistent because he's constantly trying to expand and get bigger.

Bro... I know the story from how his debut happened. But breh... that Lady Gaga thing happened 9 years ago. He's been rebounded from that, and put out better lead singles/hits since then. He's got on with MMG, Ambition and Gifted were solid well put together records... I still feel like he's hasn't perfected a sound after all this time. Why is that? He's been established, he's known in this industry... why is he doing songs with G-Eazy in 2017 reaching for a radio hit?

I sense the same kind of tug of war with his music that you're eluding to here.

However, I have to say... I don't really think he pushes too hard for his non-commercial "pro-black" shyt. I remember him at the BFC throwing shade at Kendrick's 'i' song when it released. Saying something like, "I've been saying shyt like that... I been wanting to uplift people and just be like I love myself sometimes" yada yada yada...

The thing is, Kendrick went all in with i. It was his lead single, he was fully committed... Wale always gets wishy washy with his releases man. When has he ever dropped a strong positive record as a lead single and STUCK WITH IT? He always falls back on the safe side of things and just goes with his basic formula for radio spins and doesn't step out his comfort zone... then he gets angry when he sees his peers do something that doesn't appeal to radio/commercial appeal or whatever... but it's like breh... you had that idea/concept or message before them, but you didn't portray yourself in that light with it. So in a lot of ways, he's in his own way with how he's handled his own career.

No reason Wale couldn't be doing shyt like that Black Gold song and running Shea Butter Twitter instead of this weak ass Fashion Week song

Let me prefix this by saying... this is not a Wale hate thread. This is more of an observation.

I've been rocking with Wale's music since his mixtape days. Back in like 06, 07. I remember hearing Mixtape About Nothing and being pulled in by the sounds, the lyrics, the concepts... the creativity of the project. I really thought he was going to be great, or at least make an impact from a creativity standpoint in the hiphop genre.

Now, roughly 10 years later, with countless albums and mixtapes and features under his belt, I can honestly say, that this dude's career has been pretty aimless. Typically with artists who have been doing music for this amount of time, they find a groove or a style of their own and improve on it and perfect it.

I listen to Wale's new music and I just shake my head. I don't understand why he's gone down this route, but it appears like he's obsessed with making commercial records for success/fame and appeal. He came in the class with Kendrick, Cole, Big Sean, Drake etc... why is he doing songs like this at this point in his career?

:snoop:

WHY is Wale featuring G-Eazy on a song in 2017? What is the play here? I can't imagine any of the guys he came in the game with dropping a single featuring G-Eazy on it.

:why:

Seriously... I honestly don't get it. I understand that Shine is aimed to be a light spirited fun album. But breh... My PYT and Running Back >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this Fashion Week song, and those songs are damn near a year old.

I wish this dude would have just stayed true to himself and stuck to the poetic/heartfelt pro black music he was on from time to time. It's like he doesn't know what is best to push for himself from a marketing standpoint... to be the spoken word clever uplifting MC or the cliche brash rich and famous commercial MC.

It's funny cause, look at all the praise and attention Kendrick Lamar got from his natural sisters line/stretch marks bars on Humble... Wale has been on that for years, but it seems like he doesn't even want to push that message as his main vision for himself.

Why not push this instead of that corny G-Eazy shyt? Wale and HipHop fans chime in...

Good post OP. New song sounds horrific, I can't even say what style of music that is tbh.

It all starts with something about his personality being off-putting. Not sure what it is. When you see famous artists pose with famous artists it usually makes sense. With Wale you get the sense that somehow he is fake, in a world of fake people, which is an achievement.

Musically: I -years deep in his career- have a hard time quoting 1 Wale line. My favorite song he made is the song where there's this bed up-and-down sound, but I keep forgetting the title of the song but it's a song that was ultimately covered by Rihanna. I think his pocket was going to be/would be the beautiful, natural sisters music with a very small slice of materialism and gangsta.

How he was signed to MMG, very unclear to me. I know Rozay likes soulful music but..

Then there have been these moments where Wale gets angry at a sports commentator for saying Drake is more famous than him (which obviously is true) that tell you his character is shaky.. and why he is someone we all know but nobody fukks with heavy in Hip-Hop (besides him fighting on Twitter with fans demanding them to think he's a great artist ...)

What a dumb ass thread the gifted is a hip hop classic .

Wale raps about the black mans struggle , his own depression , got some ladies joints and reps the DMV area .

I'm just mad he's moving away from the gifted sound and sounds like he's chasing hits .

you can do both, i don't know why people act like this is an issue - tupac is a prime example.

dude simply aint listenable to most people past a track or two. nothing inherently wrong with his songs, plus he's a decent lyricist and has versatile flows, but his voice and delivery are off putting. that and his social media/public persona bytchassness

Dude had his own style when he was riding for the DC GOGO sound. Yet, he denied his calling and kept making trash albums about nothing. Sad state of affairs when dude actually can make some meaningful shyt if he stop being such a whiny ass...

Look around the Booth please... this is far from a DUMBASS thread.

I've been posting on message boards for YEARS. I know how to craft a well thoughtout thread and try to generate discussion. That's what I'm doing with this. Instead of making another thread about Kendrick, Drake, Jay or whoever else this place is always stuck on, I made a thread about an artist that I'm a fan of.

I'm a FAN of Wale, and the title of this thread is FACTS. He still has no definitive sound he can hang his hat on. I know all of his best work, so you really can't say I'm not hip to his career, I agree that the Gifted is a great album, I wouldn't give it a 'Classic' tag, but I think it's his best work outside of his mixtapes for sure.

It just pains me to see him not believe in his own creativity to the point that he continuously puts out safe commercial records for the sake of not failing. (then he flops anyway) He's been doing this for far too long to still be doing that.

This dude constantly releases songs as loosies that shyt on the shyt he puts on his albums and pushes. Why is that?

That's why the shyt is so perplexing to me. The dude CAN rap, and he's clever when it comes to thinking conceptually... he sees his peers winning being themselves and not catering to radio... yet he continues to cater and pander to radio
