He was fully dependent on the image MMG gave him as Ross hit his prime. Wale was still doing his HBCU steeze and female pandering beforehand, only difference now is he was doing tracks like 600 benz. Dude use to call himself a backpacker. The reality is Wale never challenged himself to make a hit or poppin song without a R&B attachment at his peak buzz and tokenized his music to the general hip-hop audience. I don't really think he has a demand compared to other artists in his generation.
Meh.
Bro was signed to Mark Ronson years before signing with MMG. He had a bidding war going on and ran with Interscope. Came in on some crossover sh*t right out the gate with his first joint featuring Gaga. It was clear what kinda direction he was trying to go in.
The MMG move was a weird one, but I always thought it kept him alive. It was a poor fit, but he seemed like he was about to fade into blog-era oblivion before he inked with Ross. Thing is, he signed there and Meek was the one that the people actually cared about. So he got all the focus.
If it wasn't for MMG, Wale would just be a footnote about being one the first artists to get a feature from a then relatively unknown Lady Gaga.![]()
MMG was def a misfit groupMeh.

Ross was tryna get French, Nipsey and Wiz at that time as wellHe doesnt have it in em to make hits without an rnb feature. He also isnt going to wow anybody lyrically,so its not like hes a dual threat like Fab in that lane. I think Wale reached his max potential without pushing himself. Someone like him would need to go real heavy on the storytelling and clever concept records/albums.
Other than that ,hes perfect to be a guy on another rappers label who appears as a feature. I dont think MMG was a good fit,but other than Kendrick or Drake i dont know who else he couldve fit with at the time.
Wale can rap just as well as the "big 3" of his generation, can do spoken word, can do better love songs/songs for women. He had no crossover appeal - i.e. no white fans.
