the only thing to get out of this is that anybody can do well enough in math as long as they have the motivation and dedication

lol yah basically...just a long winded way of saying such. But I also kinda have an issue with all the Malcom Gladwell type nikkas who think there is no such thing as natural, God given talent. And that everyone who excells at something put in 10,000. Its an optimistic idea, but its not always true.

i have to disagree with you here. when it comes to math, as with music, or maybe lets say languages, there ARE people who naturally gifted.

I am not one of them. However, my dad has PHD in applied mathematics and my little brother was a prodigous math student from a very, very young age.

We both grew up in the same house hold and we both were held to the same standards with regard to studying. Quite frankly, we were latch-key kids, so my parents didnt force any of us to study as long as we got A's in class. I can tell you for a FACT that i studied probably 5-6x more than my brother and got better grades in all subjects EXCEPT math.

My brother was a Johns Hopskins CTY talent search kid that scored over a 700 in 7th grade on the math section of the SAT. :why:

He did not study one single bit for the exam. No problem sets, no practice test, no anything. He just walked in and slayed. I took the SAT 4 times in HS and it wasnt until my first semester senior year that I cracked 700. I also took about 15 practice SATs and several practice sets :mjcry:See the thing is I studied super had in math and feigned liek it came easy. And since I am black and I did well people always used to think I was some type of natural genius :lolbron: By I know the truth because I grew up with someone who i know for a fact has a natural inclination toward logical reasoning and has been to do shyt like multiple 2 digit number (e.g. 47 x 78) in his head rapidly since middle school :sadcam::sadcam::sadcam::sadcam::sadcam::sadcam:

I know for a fact that he did not study super hard and my dad was not a tiger dad by any means. With math, there is such thing as pure, natural talent. And there is also such a thing as people who struggle mightily despite there best attempts.

Most people however fall somewhere in the middle and with the right learning method + effort they can become capable.
the world is too competitive now for naturals just do to nothing and come out on top. they have to put in work. and lots of it. of course a natural will come out way on top if he puts in the same work as the others.

many years back i was in kmart and picked up a magazine and in that mag it said if you've been doing something for over 10yrs you become a genius in it. anything. chess, sports whatever. it was a chess mag i'd picked up.

because i was involved in sports the super nerds who weren't athletic started catching up and beating me. when they stare at the book long enough they figure shyt out too. and you ain just gonna beat people like that no mo.

as far as race goes all people are the same when it comes to academic performance. no race has a monopoly on academics. i've served many nerds lawses. i've been bodied too. it's nothing.
today if you be on top of your game you gotta be working on your "talent" 24-7 365. if youre beating local niccas doing nothin then your locals aint shyt. the world will eat you up.

:russ: I didn't read a WORD of your post OP.

Why?

Because I can't stop laughing at how I literally thought the exact same thing freshman year of college. I was sitting in that c++ language class bullshyt literally watching the professor's mouth move like :dwillhuh: , but wasn't understanding a single word coming out of it :mindblown:

I switched majors fast. I, too, just simply felt like I wasn't cut out for that shyt :manny:

I didn't think that i wasn't "smart" enough, because I know had I stuck with it an put forth an ounce of effort at least then I would've picked it up.

But I was so disgusted with how the shyt just started off confusing straight from the gate that when I got the chance I immediately :camby:

But don't take any of this into consideration in regards to making your decision :birdman: Me and you are two different people. What didn't work for me may very well work for you

Just thought it funny that I felt the same was as you're saying in the title :pachaha:

i was flying out to cali once a week for a good year and half...shyt drags on you mad hard.

plus, i came to the realization that almost all of my coworkers were dunces and simply were playing a game. you can succeed in corporate america by seemingly sucking dikk along the way. i did not want to be in an industry/environment that promoted such laurels.

but yea i am happy with what I am doing now even though my money situation grows dimmer by the day. fukk it tho money comes and goes and it is simply going at the moment. studying geomatic engineering (or surveying if you are unfamiliar).

hoping to be able to work for the NOAA or some organization that does some coastal data collection.

how did you decide to do 'geomatic engineering'? :lupe:

We'll I guess to start I reflected on some of my other past jobs and sort of tallied what types of things I enjoyed and hated in regards to each position.

I did excavating for years during high school and college so to start I had familiarity with the field.

Number one most important thing was that I had the opportunity to work at different locations. Nothing drive me crazier than waking up and traversing the same path everyday and winding up at the same spot each morning. That's shyt drove me crazy.

Secondly I wanted to have a job that would include interacting with the environment.

Third I wanted to have a skillet that you could not consider as a soft skill set. This skill set had to somewhat improve quality of life or improve upon the state of humanity.

Lastly, as I mentioned I Would like to move down to Nola in hopes of doing research on the state of diminishing coastlines or perhaps get into the oil regulation to protect environmental aspects of Louisiana, where my fam is from.

Something seems wrong. When you studied did you actually solve problems or did you just read the text?

Here's an excellent article
http://norvig.com/21-days.html

A lot of these 'geniuses' you see simply have a much harder work ethic than the rest. Koreans have been doing extremely well as of late in terms of academics as well as Indians. Koreans especially, are slaves to studying and school. You see one of these guys and they are at the top of the class and you think it's some hidden genius, but a lot of the times, it stems from what you DON'T see, which is hour after hour after hour of studying and being around great tutors.

Don't get me wrong, there ARE natural geniuses, but a lot of the successful ones are the average people who worked extremely hard.

you want a response. stop being a lazy piece of shyt.

anything is attainable if you want it enough. im back in school at 28 studying engineering and i had to start at basic algebra. now i got to a top 50 engineering school in the country.

:wow: can you expound on your study habits? ie how many hours a night? your study environment, tools, etc?
