I am telling you that it happens. I don’t know about how it’s handled on the IRS side, but the agency I work for has to deal with it occasionally. I’m not just making this up. I’ve noticed that when I come across a situation like this it’s usually someone working in construction.

That’s exactly what happens, the thief and you will have earnings from different places at the same time. But when you do a query you’ll see that one set of earnings for that SSN may belong to a J. Smith, while the other set may belong to A. Gonzalez.

You need to read my post again. I said you MAY not find out until you’re in your 60’s. I didn’t say that’s the case with everyone who has had their SSN stolen. Because some of these people have no interaction with the Social Security Administration until they file for retirement benefits and/or Medicare in their 60’s. While the 15 year old whose parents are trying to get SSI for her, or some other benefit will find out at that time when we see their little girl supposedly made $30,000 last year working at some construction company. Reading is fundamental
