Late 80's, early 90's... might not have been the time to join. But given the perpetual militarism the country is always in, "I" would never say to not join the military. Black folk are needed everywhere white people are. By design or apathy, they've demonstrated over hundreds of years, they will shyt on us if given the chance. Military service is a bulwark against that. Because even the MOST conservative militaristic bros I have ever known don't drink all of the kool-aid.

Yeah my pops says people are living in fear but that has helped him finesse a bunch of benefits because nobody wants to pushback in case they get reviewed.

Valid, but at that point America hadn’t been involved in a real war in 20 years and he lived in one of the worst hoods in America. Like whatever discrimination and goofiness you might experience in the military is 10 times better than literally finding dead bodies on your way to school.
