Im not old enough to speak on anything prior to 94 but as a knicks fan I never liked him and still dont. I give him all my respect tho he is probably the real goat and only goat.

Im assuming fans of other eastern conf teams hated him. I know older celtics fans that always hated him, I got the impression alotta them stopped watchin the nba while jordan was dominating and while their team was trash

But thats typical of boston fans, their hatred runs deep and its unconditional

I'm old enough to remember the late 80s NBA (I still vividly remember the 1987 finals).
MJ was criticized alright, but it was mostly out of jealousy (hate is a strong word). Plus, the fact that he didn't give a shyt when he entered the league rubbed old-timers the wrong way (including players).
Dude showed up as a rookie with his own shoe, nickname, amazing moves and incredible swag (gold necklace and shyt)... He was a popular trendsetter and that made some people jealous (hence, the 1985 All-Star game freezeout). Isiah didn't like that he took over his own city too.
The lack of rings was the ONLY way people could get at him but once he got it, it was a wrap.
He was a god in the 90s and the media played their role because everybody was making money off him. People born in the 90s just wouldn't know how big a deal he was.

The Lebron hate is based mostly on jealousy and the instinctive reaction of some people in protecting MJ's legacy. But we see that with all other legendary athletes and entertainers but it's more pronounced here because MJ was that big. That shyt irrational anyway.
Also, in this age of social media it's easier to root against someone than ever... Everything gets magnified these days.

I'm a 70s baby

"They" definitely hated Jordan pre-90s

He was getting Kobe type hate (they recognize the greatness but won't admit it) until they started winning Championships and he became the most loved player ever

He deserved the love though because he merked the league

When you see that image of him putting up the 6 fingers after winning that last ring he was doing that for all the haters who told him they'd never beat the Celtics & Pistons
Much less the Lakers

Well technically he didn't ever beat the Celtics :troll:

Yes he did until he finally won and shut up all of the detractors. When MJ was leading the league in scoring and getting bounced early in the playoffs they shifted on him calling him a selfish ball hog that would never win. They loved to hold up the fact that no Celtic had ever led the league in scoring and they won the most. White America used that as their main talking point. I wasn't a Jordan fan, but he was raw as fukk. He did everything. nikka could score, lock down the others teams best player, free throws, never folded or backed down even in defeat, clutch as a bytch, and when he started winning he didn't stop. He forced the league's best to lean back. His game was so complete that nobody could really criticize his game. Most of his hate comes from off the court.
This is wrong..

He was not hated he was loved :what:

1988 dunk contest was given to him gift wrapped because of this..

^^^ This...

From the time he came to the league, he was getting big endorsements but couldn't get his team over the hump. His 63 point game was flashy but still a lot of white america didn't like it & called him a ball hogg even though he got a lot of props from bird after the game.

In hindsight early in jordan's career he was somewhat viewed like carmelo anthony or pre championship dirk. A tremendous offensive player that doesn't play on both ends so he can't be called a superstar. Jordan will even tell you this day he silence a lot of critics in '88 when he won DPOY. It was rare & still is for a guard to win it. He didn't wanna be viewed a great offensive player, he wanted the label of a SUPERSTAR which you can only get playing on both ends.

By '89 I think the conensus around america was jordan was a SUPERSTAR, his shoes were high sellers, commericals, etc... But after that '90 season he was viewed as a "pre championship peyton manning". Superstar who can't win the big one. Once he got it '91 the rest was history...

Now was jordan hated? Go ask Clyde, barkley, ewing, starks, malone, stockton, payton/kemp...etc.. He stopped a lot of great players from winning championships so I'm sure low key they were salty & their fans.

From the media to overall fans he was & still is beloved. You go into the wrong babershop saying lebron is better than him or even kobe & you'll probably get a fade...

Last player that will ever get that honor. Until you get six rings...

were you really that good?

:usure:

He ruined the league forever :mjcry:

If LeBron entered the dunk contest this year he would be given the win too. Doesn't stop the fact that Jordan was being dragged for shooting too much and not being a team player. They used to complain that he was going to ruin the game because All the kids want to be a 1 man show. LeBron could have entered the dunk contest before he won a ring and although they would have given him the trophy, the next day it would be business as usual no killer instinct, clutch gene, etc. Jordan was loved by some but hated by a lot of others. The same way LeBron is currently.
