FIGHTING WORDS The Yankees and Mariners have played 273 regular season games (Bombers lead, 151-122), but it wasn't until 1995 that a rivalry developed. Here are some manic moments:
MAY 31, 1995: The benches clear when an errant Randy Johnson fastball ricochets off Jim Leyritz' shoulder and hits him in the face. More verbal shots than punches are exchanged. Leyritz tries several times to charge Johnson but is restrained by teammates.
OCT. 4, 1995: Leyritz gives the Yankees a 2-0 ALDS lead with a two-run homer in the 15th inning at the Stadium. The five-hour, 13-minute game is the longest in playoff history. "Going to Seattle with a 2-0 lead is huge," Leyritz said. "But nothing is guaranteed."
OCT. 7, 1995: Edgar Martinez hits a grand slam off Yankees closer John Wetteland in the eighth inning at the Kingdome and the Mariners win 11-8 to force Game 5 in their ALDS. Martinez finishes with seven RBI. "I've had dreams of being the hero in the big game," Martinez said.
OCT. 8, 1995: Martinez rips a McDowell pitch into the left-field corner to score Joey Cora from third and Ken Griffey Jr. from first and give the Mariners an 11-inning, 6-5 victory in Game 5 of their ALDS. "You try to think about the other team," starter David Cone said. "Maybe they were just a little bit better than us. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. But I know I'm going to think about letting it slip out of our hands."
MAY 14, 1996: Doc Gooden throws a no-hitter against the Mariners at the Stadium.
MAY 24, 1996: Griffey homers three times and drives in six runs in a 10-4 victory over the Yankees at the Kingdome.
A UG. 17, 1996: Griffey, Jay Buhner and Alex Rodriguez homer in a 10-3 victory over the Yankees at the Stadium. Rodriguez becomes the 10th player to reach the center-field bleachers with a 440-foot blast.
A UG. 28, 1996: The Mariners beat the visiting Yankees 10-2 in a game that features a four-player, 17-minute brawl in the eighth inning. Paul O'Neill and Darryl Straw-berry and the Mariners' Chris Bosio and catcher John Marzano are ejected. Some Yankees claim Mariners manager Lou Piniella hates O'Neill, a player he managed in Cincinnati from 1990-92, because O'Neill has become the hitting star in New York that he wasn't with the Reds. The Yankees accuse Piniella of ordering a brushback of O'Neill that triggers the fight. "He doesn't like Paul," Yankees infielder Mariano Duncan said of Piniella. "He hates him. Paul became a better hitter in New York and now he throws at him." Added Leyritz: "Pitching inside is one thing. But to do it consistently to one guy is bull."
A UG. 7, 1999: A day after Derek Jeter was hit on the wrist with a pitch, Yankees pitcher Jason Grimsley is ejected after hitting Martinez following a Rodriguez homer. In the next inning, Mariners pitcher Frankie Rodriguez hits Chuck Knoblauch. Piniella immediately pulls Rodriguez, but the pitcher, angered at something on-deck hitter Joe Girardi says, goes to the batters box and takes two swings at Girardi, knocking him down. Waves of Yankees charge the field, led by Shane Spencer, Girardi and Leyritz, intent on getting to Rodriguez, who backpedals to the Mariners dugout. "They instigated it," Piniella said. "It was their pitcher that hit Edgar (Martinez) after he gave up the home run. It was obvious and it was blatant." Said Grimsley: "I've got way too much respect for Edgar Martinez to hit him," he said.
