I define a c00n as having the "Sambo" personality; they cater to whites, they implicitly or explicitly showcase their love of white culture or just pleasing whites..making them smile or laugh while demeaning their own personal character or their race. They decrease their intellect, personality and masculinity when in the presence of white people; If by that definition, we go back to Sanford and Son, the first authentic black show on a major network in 1972 to 2013, I would have to say yes, we have some examples of "c00n" tv. Sanford doesn't fall into this category, but Flip Wilson, some parts of Good Times and a few others qualify. But the majority comes in the 1990s with the UPN lineup and some of the WB with that racist fukking frog (sidenote: notice that they ditched the frog when the black shows were cancelled and the white shows took over). But yea, in terms of black television particularly, there wer some that displayed Sambo characteristics.
There were the powerful ones that did not cater to sambo behavior: Sanford, Cosby Show, Family Matters (Urkel was goofy, but he was intelligent, moral, and dedicated/upstanding to his family and friends and the show was great for displaying the black middle class), and a few others. So in conclusion, there were some on both sides of the spectrums; however, there was a lot of gray area. That's just my opinion.
gotta say i never understood this, if anything whites were the target of his show. imoIf you have black entertainers that don't cater to whites, but become popular amongst whites - why do some automatically designate them cuun status?
Case in point: someone mentioned Dave Chappelle in here...
Fair enough, but let me ask you this...

Man please, his cowriter was white and he had a white audience off the rip. Miss me with the excuses.Dave felt bad about what he did, but his show most of the time wasn't c00ning and all black people knew that shyt. Dave highlighted negative aspect of blacks on some let's laugh at ourselves shyt with a lot of gems sprinkled īn throughout the show, but white people fukked it up degenerating it to "I'm Rich bytch!" and saying "******" being funny.
Those who say that don't know what a c00n is then...by my definition, if the entertainer becomes popular among whites but does not cater to them, how can he be c00ning? He cannot control their perspective. Cosby was LOVED by whites, but everybody loves to point out that he refused to c00n. Chappelle never c00ned. He was a satirist, which some people don;t understand. popularity with whites has nothing to do with "c00ning" its all about the behavior, personality, and overall presence of a black American and how they portray their black experience. That's why I hate when that word is used because nobody wants to really break it down and give it definition.
