Mist Spoiler ahead......just skip past it if you don't wanna read.
They end up driving through along a highway after escaping from the store and they drive past a bunch of creatures so tall that they can only see their legs but they don't bother them. It's implied that the mist is a lot more far reaching than they assumed They stop at a hotel and the father finds a ledger....he writes in the ledger two words that sounds a little alike, as he puts it.....one was hope...I forget what the other word was...home I think....anyway...that's it. I make it sound boring and uninteresting but it's not like that reading it...I just tried to find my copy of this story and came up empty handed. It's anticlimatic but it works and it leaves you feeling a lot better than what was presented in the movie.....even though there was no rescue or even implied rescue. I'm actually getting bummed even thinking about that ending from the movie.
When I find my copy of the book I"ll PM you a more detailed take. Been a few years. I'll figure out how to PM by then too. lol
