Schooling people takes forever; don't bother
big corporations with them trying to own everything/DMCA/sampling red tape prevented new artists from being heard

youtube just reflects your prior preferences without drastic additions to what's new/hot from left field like how hip hop blogs used to run things trying to put you onto new artists but rather just more of what you already like

not sure why all hip hop blogs died other than the talent level isn't there and those people with talent got tired of doing things for free and not monetizing their craft with this giant learning curve to be independent and run everything logistics/promotion/beat making before you even get to the recording music, where doing everything independently ruined the fun out of creativity, and then add everybody who extort artists because of their ignorance into the mix

spotify playlists are rigged with industry plants and payola

soundcloud is one giant roulette wheel of randomness that sometimes hit or not at all because it caters for different demographics...make a meme ass song and blow up on tiktok while you can

and then for the few independent artists who drop music once in a while, we don't really support their projects or listen to them habitually after the first listen and they don't have too much of anything else set up merch or otherwise to support them long term for it to not classify as a hobby and they end up doing something else

this aint really the a great metric to judge as sure, wale can book 1000 person venues and pack it out, like bey can book 80K venues and pack it out....people book venues that are relative to the size of their fanbase. everyone in this thread has some fans, the premise is more about is their next project gonna hit with the general public/casuals or not. i think most of them have fans who'll tune in

wale been washed since leaving MMG
People still check for a ladies anthem for wale :yeshrug: .

:picard: One of the quickest falloffs in recent history:wow:

When I heard this I thought Roddy had next :wow:

Then PEMBA dropped, The Box was huge, had the #1 song in the country with the DaBaby, which brings me to this, DaBaby had a MUCH worse fall off, Roddy can recover but DaBaby will never get back to where he was.

If Jay z drop a album and it do 250k first week and got plat

is that a flop?

I'm not sure???? Compared to his own previous numbers yes, but within this new landscape and considering his age?? It would be impressive.

I feel the exact opposite way. It was an average album that caught on commercially even though it was completely generic and by the numbers.
That album lacked the impact of his previous project. He can come back though
I lowkey thought Uzi was washed but Just Wanna Rock came through and crushed buildings
It's so funny because Uzi had tried with that other song that became a dance meme that gained some traction but it didn't go all the way(Futsal Shuffle??). I Wanna Rock with that Jersey club energy though:wow:

DaBaby's fall off was epic. His rivals Fetty Wap in how steep it was.

yall overrating that twenty88 commercially. that was a good mixtape, but it wasn't putting up points in the paint. they also have a toxic relationship that, at least women, hate, this couple gets dragged more than i knew until one day i was trying to google something about them and saw nothing but dislike for them as a couple, they're not seen as positive or #goals.

and jhene herself is pretty second tier amongst the r&b girlies, she has her own work to do to regain traction the next time she drops, which might be a min since she has a whole infant to care for
Toxic relationships sell too.

Technology and the algorithm has turned streaming into a newer version of the radio.

There isn't really any discovery happening, the platforms just feed you what you already heard literally like a radio station. It's depressing. Curation has become a lost artform for music and it shows.
