The Washington Post announced Wednesday that it is eliminating its sports department as part of a mass layoff of one-third of its staff across all departments.

Some sports reporters will move into other roles amid large-scale cutbacks by the venerable newspaper. The Post currently has reporters on site covering Super Bowl LX in California and the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.

The moves were expected for several weeks, since word leaked out that the Post had told its sports staffers who had arranged to cover the Olympics that they would not be going. After it became public, the Post reversed course and said it would be sending a limited staff.

The changes were announced Wednesday by executive editor Matt Murray in a videoconference with staff. A total number of layoffs was not announced in the call, and the Post wouldn't say how big its current staffing is.

"The Washington Post is taking a number of difficult but decisive actions today for our future, in what amounts to a significant restructuring across the company," a Post spokesperson said in a statement. "These steps are designed to strengthen our footing and sharpen our focus on delivering the distinctive journalism that sets The Post apart and, most importantly, engages our customers."

Terrible. I used to read everything in the Sports section from the columns, to box scores to the All Met High School teams. I'm glad my nephew was able to make All Met Honorable Mention last year before they killed it

Internet killed traditional sports print media. :francis:
Imma need you Brehs to wake up and realize what’s happening because THAT is not what is killing traditional Media.

The oligarchs are killing traditional media.

Americans are so damn propogandized that we blame ourselves—your post indirectly is—instead of looking at Bezos, Zuckernerd, Musty and them as the blame.

Internet has more to do with it than the Oligarchs tho. fukk Bezos, Zuck, and the rest of them bozos. Not saying they ain't contributed to the demise, but the shyt you used to goto the paper to get and have to wait for you simply don't anymore.

I don't want it to go away, but the audience has become accustomed to instant info.

Bozos would rather throw the whole product in the bushes than figure out how to battle the athletic.

If I’m one of these big orgs I’d throw bags at shıt like House of Highlights, let them do them and have the OG writers just work on bigger think pieces where they don’t have to try to sound cool and young.

Sports is universal. There is still a large order crowd that would resonate with beat writers, columnist and sports talk radio. the Post is being irresponsible because they can’t monetize sports which is foaming at the mouth with money

Bro, they own the internet. It’s them.

Google manipulating their algo to push down traditional outlets and boost their summaries, Facebook punishing outlets on their algo unless they bought boosted posts, etc.

It's them. And now they out here buying up traditional outlets to prop their ideology onto venerable outlets.

There is a new world order happening right now and we aren't paying attention.

he got what he wanted, trump losing in 2020. When Trump won in 24, he lost motivation to use the Post as a cudgel against Trump and dgaf anymore if it survives.
