Independent media is the only path forward. But even state-funded media is better than our corporate and billionaire owned mainstream media.

1. I think the unscrupulousness of the current administration presented financial opportunities that wouldn't necessarily be there under a democratically controlled government. 2. Additionally, trump way more likely to gin up some bullshyt to try and strong-arm them and fukk up their money and make life difficult, so they would rather just bend the knee. 3. Ironically the NYT has some of the best sports coverage now via The Athletic, and I'm surprised WaPo didn't see the incentive or value in trying to compete with that.
They have bought up damn near every popular media outlet and systematically destroyed any mechanism that could hold them and their agenda accountable.
The internet has no doubt cost newspapers and news outlets money but the people buying them could lose that money and not even notice it. Bezos could fund that paper for the rest of his life and it would cost him nothing.

Facebook and Google killed newspapers cause they used their monopoly to take ad revenue.
There's no way a proper newspaper can make a profit in today's environment. Billionaires won't let it happen.
media outlet modernization is a whole ass thing.... washington post was doing as well as it was doing through the 2010s purely because of its status as a legacy fixture
they ate a ton of losses just to keep appearances for a likely decade longer than they should've
