I will say though that out of all these, Will Smith is probably the biggest in terms of hitting a brick wall. With Denzel, Forest, Samuel, and Eddie, they can play older characters. For Will Smith, he has always been an action star, and like he this 'youth' factor in Men in Black and Independence Day.

Now if he is in a action film, it looks weird in a sense as he tries to play that young guy but really he ain't young anymore.
Will has a bit of a Catch 22 situation. When he does serious roles folks say he’s boring and they want the “old” Will Smith. But when he tried to infuse that into his new movies, people complain that he’s older now and it doesn’t “hit the same way”. He can’t win.

He wasted many prime years of his career making forgettable action movies

Unstoppable
2 Guns
The Taking of Pelham 123
etc.

The only movie of his I really liked in the last decade was Fences

I wish he and Spike Lee had collaborated more in recent years
Flight was dope :yeshrug:

@mitter His acting ability hasn't fallen off. There's simply a shortage of original and or quality scripts in the pipeline. All you have to do is look at his Filmography and you'll see what I mean. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you look at a lot of the movies made in the past decade-- few if any of them are destined to be classics. Movies are created via an algorithm these days. When a purple construction worker and a comic book clown are two of the most well received cinematic characters of the decade-- you know there's a problem. Even movies with novel concepts find a way to fail in their execution due to meddling studio execs busy checking boxes instead of telling a compelling story,

This
The mainstream doesn’t support good movies; that’s why you see Hollywood churn out the same type of movie.

@RadioFreeTom
I tensed in my seat in the theater when Hackman shouted at the beginning of this scene. Intense.

[Quoted tweet]
Crimson Tide (1995)
Denzel Washington accepted his role opposite Gene Hackman because he wanted the opportunity to 'be in there jousting with a master.' Well, he got his wish.
This scene is incredible.

@nj_fisherman
So, how realistic is it…?

3/51
@RadioFreeTom
Not very

4/51
@ETTD18
Captain Ramsey held his patience in check with his inexperienced, second-guessing XO, until he didn’t.

5/51
@RadioFreeTom
The XO was right

6/51
@NYinLA2121
Fun Fact: Quentin Tarantino was the onset ghost writer for this film and wrote the horse scene.

@CarmenW78321492
Hackman was the complete character actor. No matter how many characters I watched him play through the years, I would buy-in to each and get lost in his new character. He possessed effortless and unique talent. I aways left the cinema pleased.

8/51
@mrschips
Wow…

9/51
@HelenDriscoll
I met him a few times in the early 90s. A kind and gentle man, loved to paint and draw.
Big dude.

10/51
@uhh_merica
I was so enthralled by Hackman in The French Connection that I actually watched all of Part 2

He’s one of the best!

11/51
@11Shultz
Gene always commanded the screen.

12/51
@corabora5
Whew! What a great scene. Hackman and Denzel fed off each other.

13/51
@oufenix
I feel like I should watch this. I might even like it.

14/51
@Donnymack666
Of course, if Hackman had been correct that preempting was a matter of national life & death, Denzel would have gotten us all killed. Interesting choice of boat. I suppose our success with Football might have amused, get it?, the Football, plus catchy & well-known team.

15/51
@JoeyKeyport
Absolutely- an incredible scene

16/51
@Atom2384
So, which is ultimately better, Crimson Tide or The Hunt for Red October?

17/51
@DocRock54
Great scene and great movie!

18/51
@marysjogren1
Gene could be terrifying.

19/51
@SixNein
He is one of my favorite actors. He was really good in unforgiven too.

20/51
@CeCe374774461
One of my favorite scenes

21/51
@SlideToBody
Randomly just watched this again tonight…. Never gets old. 2 heavyweights going toe to toe.

22/51
@vinotamu
Great movie. So many good actors. You are right. Powerful scene.

23/51
@PNWNative57
A phenomenal movie! Intensity that is unmatched! Hackman and Washington were amazing

24/51
@RWNemanich
I think the Chief had the role

25/51
@KeithKopinski
Very inspiring, sir

26/51
@jck77
Forgot how good that movie was.

27/51
@jdstanger
Awesome

28/51
@name_pitt
Amazing piece of filmmaking. Hackman and Washington played off each other perfectly.

29/51
@zorgnak
Wow. Never saw this one. On my radar now.

30/51
@DarrenHumanity
The abundance of talented actors inspires awe. Seriously.

31/51
@RmbaileyRob
My wife had one of our few arguments over this movie. She could not understand how I could see both sides of this 😁

32/51
@amdavis1218
One of my absolute favorite movies.

33/51
@Gr8TweetNTheSky
Two generational talents.

34/51
@stevencdavis2
I love both of these guys, but the scenes of the two of them arguing in this movie have always made me cringe.They are each capable of far more nuance, but just turned these scenes into spittle flecked scenery chewing.They make me laugh at points b/c I find them kind of campy.

35/51
@stevemac85
Really good movie and two great actors.

36/51
@MartyLenz_KOA
Love this movie...

37/51
@MikeFazedMuch
I need to rewatch this movie.

38/51
@Kenyonthug
I saw this in the theater when I was 14 - I really enjoy this flick. My brother and I get drunk and watch it late night style every summer when I come visit him.

39/51
@syyoungman
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

40/51
@newenhuyse
Geez, now I want to see this!

41/51
@becks58
Hackman is THE BEST.

42/51
@RRRRiffRaff
Such a great movie.

43/51
@skaggs91241
I can’t imagine being a Jr. Enlisted in close proximity. I remember when you could hear our SgtMaj yelling at the CO in we were terrified. This would be bad.

But the XO was correct.

44/51
@bebedash
Gene Hackman kinda reminds of Tim Walz here, lol

45/51
@KTSavage
Thank you. Wow. Fantastic scene.

46/51
@UofAgrad97
One of my favorites

47/51
@tfan_826

48/51
@AtomCrisp
Just watched this yesterday.

49/51
@jcrsaltman
Wow. Two great actors. I had forgotten how good this movie was.

50/51
@raven1066
VERY good movie but always enjoy the fact the US Navy refused to help make it. Think they got help from the French Navy. Just a funny tidbit.

51/51
@g90opklnm
The XO and Chief of the Boat are "woke" while the CO is "based" LOLing

@BullzOverBearz
One of my favourite movies. The dialogue in this is so damn good.

Two other great military movies along the same lines…

A Few Good Men

Men of Honor

5/31
@ClintStgo
Damn Man!

We don't see movies like this anymore

6/31
@CHILLHOP23
I love that it isn't clear-cut. They both have a strong point.

7/31
@SumFacet
Denzel and Gene deserve two Oscars each for this scene. But I have give a shout out George Dzundza as COB for perfectly complimenting those performances.

8/31
@CHILLHOP23
It's one of the all-time scenes in my opinion. Similar to Tom Cruise vs Nicholson in A Few Good Men.

9/31
@GarySLesserEsq
Two of the greatest ever. What an amazing scene.

10/31
@Gen_X_Vet
The Captain was 100% correct in his calls regarding the received and partially received messages by the way.

Denzel is by far one of my favorite actors. It’s unfortunate that his character was in the wrong.

Masterful scene by both of these great actors.

11/31
@LASTCARonBROCK
Love this scene too. I really enjoy a good acting competition between two pros.

12/31
@William46350224
Denzel should always be brought up as in the top ten actors of all time.

13/31
@BigDaddy_YY
One of the most intense scenes ever!

14/31
@Well_GaaLL_Dang
That scene had me on edge...two great actors

15/31
@omniVeryAngry
Deserves another viewing.

On the list.

“I’M THE COMMANDER OF THIS SHIP!!!”

23/31
@Choosing2Thrive
Coach Boone v Coach Dale

24/31
@Pettitt_Art
2 of the GOATS! Every movie is made better by either being in it.

25/31
@kapurcell
Truly underrated performances by these two and a really good movie. I’ve seen it at least half a dozen times.

26/31
@DoctorLoveKing
Great scene… actor retired now living good life

27/31
@WatchMyReview
Wow what acting.

28/31
@smc429
Mr. Hackman had a dry sense of humor that would come clear out of left field, and it was funny..

29/31
@WyomingWriter
@neilbelieves @BUCAntonio

30/31
@MrJames__321
I need to watch this movie again.
