Personally I prefer Alicia, but cats acting like Beyonce not in the discussion are tripping. Her superstardom gets her a seat at the table alone, some of you younger cats don't realize that everybody didn't like Mariah, either...
Beyonce's strength to me is her performance acumen, she's an elite performer. She can really blow too, my issue is alot of her music lacks substance compared to Alicia (though not compared to most other people)...
The last 20 years, notwithstanding successful comeback runs by Mariah, Mary, and Janet, who are all of a previous era in general, have been run by Bey, Alicia, and Rihanna. Those are our biggest black singers and you can make an argument for either of the three...
Being this is Versuz you gotta look at the charts...
•As a soloist Bey has 6 #1's, 28 Top 40 hits, and 38 Hot 100 entries. She's also been featured on 6 Top 40 hits, 1 #1, and 9 Hot 100 tracks...
If you're gonna add her legend work with DC, that's 4 more #1's and 13 more Top 40/Hot 100 spots. Her catalogue is deep enough to run with anybody, the question with Bey is always quality or quantity...
•by comparison Alicia only has 3 #1 records, 13 Top 40, and 22 Hot 100's. Her features list includes 1 #1, 3 Top 40, and 5 Hot 100 chartings...
It's obvious from the surface Alicia doesn't have Bey's popularity, the question is whether her quality of work is superior. Which, I think so, but then it's a good point that alot of her best work was well over a decade ago, while Bey has put out more strong material in the recent decade...
•just for the fukk of it, I think Rihanna is the only other '00s baby that has a seat at the Alicia/Bey table. She has 7 #1's, 36 Top 40 songs, and 44 Hot 100 spots. Her features include 3 #1's and 15 Top 40/Hot 100 joints. You can make the argument she's more popular than Bey, which is what gives her a seat at the table...
Beyonce is cool. She's not as trash as cats on here say. But I don't find her work to be as resounding as the machine tried to make her, they tried to make her the new Janet and they came close, but I don't think her work quite reached that level. Her popularity pretty much did, though...
