It was the sedative plus the intricacies of the dream they created, remember it had three layers, the deeper you go, the harder it is to "Kick" out of the dream.

When they went into the last sequence of dreams, they used the sedative machine on multiple levels... but the machine was a figment of the last persons imagination?

I have to re-watch this movie in the day time. I watched it at night was sleepy didn't know what was going on fell asleep woke up still didn't know what was going on

yea that was basically the entire reason they had Ellen Paige play the "new architect" role

on the flipside i could see why they felt the need to do that, if they just had shyt popping off we'd have no idea wat the hell was happening
