can't agree with "no hand holding"

these games are more complicated, well at least when you compare them to the more straightforward 8 bit/16bit era games.

plus they've pretty much gotten rid of instruction books.

the rest of the list is on point :tu:
games were tough as nails back then.. i hardly beat any of them.. whether it was NES, genesis etc.

now its impossible not to be able to beat it
a lot of it has to do with the checkpoints. imagine playing games from today with 3 lives and 3 continues and without a save point:sadcam:

but to your first point, a lot of those NES games would have a dude feeling defeated after just one level :sadcam:

On the real tho

Handholding is a big problem in newer games.

We are 4 to 5 hours in a game and everything you should do is laid out in front of you.

Most games are too fukking short these days, not to mention easy. There also used to be a lot more variety in the mainstream. These days, you have to search harder for the more ambitious games or go underground for the indie gems, and even when it comes to indies, there's been a huge flood of them, making it harder for you to get through all the crap and get a piece of the pie. That's why Yakuza is the best modern game franchise, it does everything a game is supposed to do, and masterfully. If 5 gets localized for North America this year, there's no doubt it'll be game of the year, possibly even the century. Yakuza 4 is one of the most accomplished masterworks of gaming since Shenmue II, the undisputed best game of ALL time.

I always thought that a lack of checkpoints was a cop out to make games more difficult than they really are.
