That goes in hand with budgets for games ballooning. If games didn't improve visually, people would then complain about a lack of "next gen." People value gameplay and all that still but then you'd have lots of cats complaining about paying hundreds of dollars for a console that seems to still be stuck on yesterday's tech. Look at Nintendo's situation, they seem to improve their titles with each generation graphically and gameplay still is top notch but the lack of better hardware capable of cutting edge techs makes them get either third party titles that are gimped compared to their other versions or outright not getting them. Who really wants to play Bayonetta 2 on a Wii U?? shyt would've been way better on a PS4 or PC.

That's why these indie games coming out seem like a nice counter balance as a lot of them seem to remind me of the type of games that would come out back then. Now you can have your cake and eat it too.

But that's the thing ... Who invented "next gen" these console makers are brainwashing us to think something is "last gen" or next gen and needs upgrading...

Question ....
If they where still on PS1 or shyt PS2, nintendo 64 and Xbox .. with no mention of making newer consoles but just making more games would we be satisifed... probably so ... but the console makers are feeding us "lifelike" and "photo realism" down our throat where that what we think we need.
I still didnt get a PS4 yet, I was holding out for the show to get it ... but nothing i like is on ps4 yet and its liek do I really wanna pay 400 just so my guys will look like Im watching a real game .. I could just watcha real game

Meh. Games back then had deadlines too. We just didnt know better PC games were gettin patches and expansion packs tho. Consoles didnt have that luxury.

Terms like "next" or "last" gen are completely meaningless in the grand scheme of things. There have been 8 or 9 generations of hardware since the 70's/80's, that's literally all the number means.

It hit most of it right on the head (too easy, emphasis on local multiplayer, your game working the day you buy it).

I think the biggest things to me were software exclusives an console cultures being different. Playin a Genesis and playing a SNES were 2 different experiences with different triple A titles. Now there's only a handful of differences between consoles.

Most games are too fukking short these days, not to mention easy. There also used to be a lot more variety in the mainstream. These days, you have to search harder for the more ambitious games or go underground for the indie gems, and even when it comes to indies, there's been a huge flood of them, making it harder for you to get through all the crap and get a piece of the pie. That's why Yakuza is the best modern game franchise, it does everything a game is supposed to do, and masterfully. If 5 gets localized for North America this year, there's no doubt it'll be game of the year, possibly even the century. Yakuza 4 is one of the most accomplished masterworks of gaming since Shenmue II, the undisputed best game of ALL time.

There used to be fun JRPGs, platformers, beat em ups, good fighting games, stealth games, and every else in between. Now it is FPS galore.

One thing I loved about old school gaming was gaming was it's own domain and unlike anything else and they were willing to take risks. You had games like Bomberman, Poy Poy, PowerStone, Dragon Force, and a bunch of completely original titles. Now gaming is becoming Hollywoodized, and so many games are following a formula

Yo, even with a gameshark it still took my 60 hours to beat xenogears. it probably would have taken me the whole summer to complete without it.

co-op and local multiplayer are the biggest things. there's absolutely no reason i shouldn't be able to play every last game i own with other people right next to me. dumbest shyt ever.

i miss the overworld in rpgs.

i miss the feeling i used to get when i finally got an airship/land vehicle and got to explore every land mass i could get to. now every thing is a map with way points you can fast travel to
