A surprising amount of sensitivity in this thread.

With the focus on physical capabilities in college sports, I wonder how often the mental states of athletes are checked. I'm guessing almost never.

Bunch of fraudulent sadness and condolences and outrage.

Missing the point. Access to a gun only make a suicide attempt much more likely to be more successful. Guns have nothing to do with the mental and emotional rut one would be in to make that decision to attempt suicide in the first place.

No, you're missing my point;

I am not speaking on mental health. It's a very real and painful issue. And wanting to kill yourself is not something I'd judge someone over. I'll never know that pain.

All that said; without that gun he's probably still alive today. There's also stats on how most ppl don't attempt suicide after surviving their initial attempt.

I have empathy for mentally ill people who get treatment and people who can only find peace through death.

We still have too many guns in this country and they're too readily available. More available than proper health care.

Agree on the bolded. And I don't disagree that if he didn't have a gun he'd maybe be alive today.

The point is the gun issue is secondary. I'm saying suicide is not even a serious option unless you're in that place mentally and emotionally. And getting that care, even if it's just talking to a friend or family member who cares and won't judge would be more helpful in preventing suicide than removing guns from the equation.
