We always talk about NYC in the 90s but what was Newark like?

I had a relative who lived there and he said it was crazy. He made it seem as if it was worse than NYC. He worked in a fried chicken spot and said it would be a plexiglass in between the cashier and customer.

Any stories? Was there a crack epidemic there as well? etc

I remember my aunts and uncles on my mom's side used to live in Newark back then and we'd visiting in the early to mid 90s.

Gunshots in broad daylight.
Crackheads washing windows when you pulled off I-78
House music cookouts in the summer where the crowds were like 99% black.
