Yeah he got a lot of those type of beats and seemed to always pick the wackiest pinball sounding Timbaland beats back then. Even Big Pimpin is a wack Timbaland beat. Pimp C tried to tell us, but at least he saved the song with his charisma.

You've gone too far now. Nothing abouy "Big Pimpin" is wack. And I respect Pimp C and his opinion, but he was off about that one. That song is classic.

With Kendrick breaking records there's been a lot of talk about streaming numbers lately.

I been looking at these for a lot of artists and got to address the elephant in the room.

Audiences ain't checking for Hov's classic era albums like that compared to his peers. Question is, why?

Daily streams by album for last week

Blueprint 168,643
Vol. 2 149,408
BP2 131,367
Vol. 3 105,294
RD 80,299
Dynasty 35,102
Vol. 1 25,456

Last week's daily streams for some other albums from the 90s and 00s

Chronic 2001 2,113,338
AEOM 1,541,731
Ready To Die 1,144,653
LAD 1,101,599
Stankonia 986,094
Nellyville 908,040

Illmatic 518,775
Country Grammer 485,195
Doggystyle 479,966
The Chronic 478,362
The Infamous 474,265
36 Chambers 446,928

Aquemini 158,589
Word of Mouf 137,580

Wondering what unbiased brehs like @bigde09 @Westbama Heartthrob and @ThirdAct got to say about this

Got to add the following note for clarity. If you stream a song on a Greatest Hits or compilation, it get added to the total for both the original album and the compilation, and to all alternate versions of the original album.

Example. Blueprint daily streams last week was 168,643, BP2 streams was 131,367. Total of 300,010.

The BP Deluxe version listed includes all tracks from BP1 and BP2. You look at the daily totals for BP Deluxe, it's exactly 300,010.

Greatest Hits and compilations ain't cannibalizing the individual album totals on the source site. And anyway Hov ain't the only artist on the list with a popular Greatest Hits :mjlol:

As you all know, I'm from the south :manny:

So I aint met too many jay z fans irl. I think the coli is predominantly a certain demographic, so they have image in their head about jay that's out of touch with the average listener

Plus, jay z never has been the top dog in the game at any point of his career. He's been able to ride wave after wave to siphon more life into his career while his more talented peers burned out creatively or ventured off into different lanes (i.e. acting or business)

It also has to be said that a lot of jay z's music doesn't have the timeless quality as a result of all that wave hopping. It's some songs a lot of coli posters love from jay that my generation wouldn't react to at all :francis:

Compared to pac or big who have music that will always connect based on the production, subject matter, and songwriting

Nobody my age tryna hear hard knock life :mjlol:

It took jay z to be deep into his career before he really started talking about stuff with substance. And even then, it's still coming off as riding a wave. Jay z just always feels like he's playing catch up to me. Which I can't fault him for. Nobody believed in him when he came in the game, so he had to find what works. It made him successful, but he lacks the innovation his peers brought to the game.

I can't be a jay z fan cause I really don't know who he is. Just what style he took to keep his foot in the door :yeshrug:

I wonder if drake will have a similar trajectory in another decade or so. Cause I don't think kids would enjoy songs like forever, started from the bottom, or best I ever had due to how much different tastes will have changed

Breh most of jay's albums don't hold up. He was steady wave hopping hopping and chasing trends.

When people on here say "sounds outdated" Jay-z is the definition.

you got albums from the 80s that sound fresher.

Nah, people cherry pick what they consider dated and what sounds fresh. When people are saying Reasonable Doubt sounds the freshest of all of his albums, it speaks volumes (no pun). Reasonable Doubt sounds like 1996.

And everybody else is posting the same Jay songs that people were saying were wack from day one.
