I will admit that this new shyt is way more fun to dance to than my beloved Golden Era Hip Hop.

It's the 120 bpm tempo (or 60 of you rock to the half time groove).

90 bpm (the old tempo) is perfect to rhyme to but not quite the best dance groove.

Conversely, it's harder to spit to the 120 bpm stuff, which is why we get this sing songs, sparse style that's so popular now.

Bone was spittin flat out to the new school tempo and you couldn't understand them.

I heard that more from the rock crowd because rappers didn't sing or play instruments. The mixing was bad as well.

Everyone started loving hip-hop when all those sample checks started rolling in though.

Music from the East and West Coast are still good. The stuff coming from the South is still trash.

For us that want them to sound like we think they should sound:

That's the point I'm making. We say "your lyrics must be at this level" They say "O rly?" and make shyt like the Nay Nay.. with pretty much no lyrics. We say "This keyboard beat shyt is garbage" They then make a beat in 90 seconds using only one finger to play the notes.

We rage on and they just shrug.

I have no dog in that fight.

I don't care how they sound. Or anything about them actually. I'm a grown ass man, why would I care how these kids feel?

That's what is so :what: about interacting with some of these kids on this board. It's like....do your parents and their peers sit around on some :lupe: when you open your mouth? Do they hang on your every word? Do they try to seem cool to you and your friends?

fukk no....so why hop on the internet and act like I'm supposed to be :krs: over your opinion?

Then these same people will turn around and dikk ride the fukk out of Future, who is old enough to go to my high school reunion. shyt is mind boggling.

I was actually thinking about this earlier this evening. I'm an old "these kids these days" ass nikka now. I can't listen to this new rap and the shyt that's a part of my era sounds dated and corny now.

Also, I'm a Family Man and I got kids now. I'll be damn if rap music is going to be a part of my household.
My pops was a family man and I grew up hearing rap more than I did any old school(I'm 25). No need to act like you never fukked with it at all just cause you got some kids :camby:

I played Digable Planets first album for some 20 somethings recently during a road trip. They were dumbfounded that Hip Hop used to sound like that. The content. Everything.

Nah, in the mid 90's rap still had a message. Can't compare it to this republican rap trash that's all about money.
What message? The central theme in HipHop never changes

old heads today think everything has changed when it really hasnt. radio has always preferred garbage unless you found a show focused on the good shyt. even in 87-88 i had wait until a certain time on a certain remote AM station to hear the good shyt. or get it from dj's or word of mouth. same as today

I dunno what you consider garbage or good but every region had multiple artists selling millions of records, so anything from Outkast to Wu to Pac to BONE would be on the radio.

So nah....it's not the same. Hell, regional radio stations aren't even the same. You got Hot 97 in NY playing Future 24/7 now.

But honestly, you're talkin about a very specific time period. Before radio was playing them, radio was only fukkin' with the most commercially-aimed rappers, most of whom were trash. That's why so many people hold those old school mix shows in such high regard- that was the only time you could hear the 'real shyt' on the radio- the rest of the week was mostly R&B and Hammer/Young MC/Father MC/etc... radio don't give a shyt abut diversity and balance- radio plays what they're either paid to play, or fits into their format.

You're talking about late 80's early 90's.

Once the 90's got going it didn't matter if the radio was fair. They're going to play who is hot.

So if....let's say BIG sold 4 mill....you're going to hear him on the radio. If Outkast sold 3 mill....if Pac sold 5 mill....if Wu sold 4 mill....Jay, Nas, whoever.

People (not you, I mean in general) have a hard time reconciling the fact that at one point you could actually be as lyrical as you want, and still receive radio play and mainstream coverage. Nowadays if it's on the radio or in the club there's almost a disclaimer like :whoa: "well, this ain't meant to be taken seriously".

Anyway, to flat out say "the radio hasn't changed" is :mjlol:as hell. Like I said, play a Hot 97 mix from around let's say '96....and then compare it to the mix Flex threw on during that whole Drake reference track fiasco.
