These video essays always have some clickbait shyt to them. It's really about the state of male R&B specifically and why none of them are dominating the charts like in the past.

R&B is not dead and male R&B is not dead but ppl have to realize we are dealing with a consumer base who's rappers now sing and are the "heartthrobs"(no matter how hideous). Rappers have taken the lane R&B singers once had. Maybe it will cycle back but only time will tell.
And rappers don’t need singers for hooks

male R&B is dead on a mains level

As long as brehs keep making dance related music we good. Dance music will never die worldwide. Jazz started as dance music

Just take what we got now and make it danceable. That shytty ass “vibe” trap rnb has to fukking go. Subtweet shade music is garbage. Bring back the flair

Trapsoul was the definitive moment in the shift. I feel like. I been saying for a while, RnB music is waaaay “harder” than its ever been, and the lines between RnB and hip hop are blurred way more than they were in the New Jack Swing era. New Jack Swing still had the heartthrob and begging. What we got now is what I termed “Hard n B”(:dame:)

The genre is more cold, boastful playerism, and singers literally crooning about the streets. Not in a reflective old school societal commentary kinda way, but rather they’re literally crooning about being street dudes. Or even as breezy pointed out, there’s an emo edge to them, a weird esotericism. Can’t just croon anymore and make “la-di-da” love songs anymore. R.Kelly was considered risqué in his time, but he’d be rated G compared to RnB now.

I knew it was over and the lines were officially blurred when August Alsina was crooning and singing about “I ain’t no snitch nikka, no bytch nikka” on “Cuz I love this shyt”

Not saying it’s good or bad. Just an observation.
