Cs had their run from 84-87(Pistons had them in 87 before the Bird steal) and Lakers had theirs from 85-89(Mavs had them in 88 but Derek Harper ran the clock out)
Pistons were best team in the league in 87 and 88

The difference is a lot of folks were cool about it cause the Lakers and Celtics basically had ran the league from the 50s up to that point in time.
So most folks were either Lakers or Celtics fans.
The ratings were also the best the league had ever seen up to that point.
Also folks bytch about the playoffs this year's playoffs, but in 1989 the playoffs resembled this years playoffs except the bulls were able to push Zeke's pistons to 7 games in the ECF (bulls were the only team to give the pistons loses in the whole playoffs). The Lakers swept all the way to the finals and the Pistons swept the Lakers in the finals.
Yet with all that the finals ratings and playoff ratings were through the roof. At the end of the day most fans don't care if the early rounds are good. All they care about are if the finals are good.
I rather see a competitive finals and non competitive 3 rounds than competitive 3 rounds and a nets vs Lakers finals snooze fest.
