@ShaDynasty I thought about that question this month. Madlib, Alchemist, and Hit-Boy probably can't ever make an album as big for the genre as Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx, and 36 Chambers...but I feel like Bandana, Bo Jackson, or King's Disease 2 is about as close as you can get to damn near perfectly produced albums in modern times. And I actually think that albums like those would've been given more mics by more reviewers if they had dropped 10+ years ago.

This reminds me of a discussion I was thinking about recently.

I think whether we all realize it or not, the odds of hearing many genre-breaking truly amazing 5-mic albums like Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Illmatic, Chronic, etc, from here on out are pretty low. We may get an occasional one, but I think the odds of getting a ton of them are lower. So my question is, how many super dope albums that are consistently great (if not groundbreaking) does it take to get the respect of one of those groundbreaking albums?
:jbhmm:
Like, Raekwon always has Cuban Linx, and that can never be taken away. But is there ever a point where someone could drop 5 really solid 4 mic albums and be seen as having a better catalogue than Rae? Or does 1 Cuban Linx level album top a handful of 4 mic albums no matter what? I'm genuinely curious.

And lastly, it's so much easier now to release more music. So it it unfair to the 1990's and 2000's cats that they have way less music to put up against a lot of today's artists that can drop a couple dope projects every year instead of one dope project every couple years?

I think I had the same thought. The highs of Wu are greater than Griselda's, but to me I've heard almost enough Griselda classics to put them in the discussion.

They need a few seminal albums to put them over the top.

I think the consistency matters more than just having one classic album. With Rae you could be slick and argue the Wu albums add to his count, same with Ghost and someone like Prodigy. I think time is more appreciative to the artists that have a consistent 4 mic discography compared to someone with a classic and nothing but bad albums. It's kind of why we love guys like Sigel, Styles, Busta, Ross, Cormega etc. compared to Smif-N-Wessun for example, with one surefire classic then pretty much forgettable albums after.

You feel Hitboy is up there with his production? I honestly prefer the Denny LaFlare beats on this album over anything Hitboy produced in the past two years. It just doesn't grab me at all.

Margiela Split Toes is crazy.

I honestly think Griselda is getting close to having the best catalog in rap. I mean who else has this many good records? Besides Wu-Tang?

yeah it’s crazy. I seriously listen to Griselda crew shyt all day everyday and it’s jammed packed with songs. Every time something drops it’s just more added to my HUGE Griselda playlist.

what a time to be a rap fan

listen to benny and conway old music if thats a shocker, people reinvent themselves all the time

Yeah Benny is my favorite rapper in the last few years and I don’t “love” his old stuff.

I believe he admits a few times that his old stuff isn’t all that great. I will have to get back to you on the exact lines.

I think in Griseldas case, and no diss to them but their music is as offshoot/derivative or an extension of the classics you named except the Chronic. Roc and West are pushing that sound Rza, Premo, Havoc and whoever else you can name from back then forward. Plus legends like a Rae and a Prodigy had all of the stars aligned for them, they created a sound within hip-hop at a time where it was still growing. Plus the culture and the fans were all on the same page so their impact was much greater. West could curate an album tomorrow, that to us on this forum or heads of a certain generation is a certified classic but it just wouldn't get the same respect of a OB4CL/RD/Illmatic/Chronic/The Infamous etc.

The stars aint aligned for it right now, the culture and the people that listen to it are way too segmented. You got Gen X, Millennials right in the middle and then Gen Z that really don't give a fukk about the albums we deem classic...shyt their illmatic might be good kid mad city. Everyone aint gonna agree on it like how things were back then. If anything it could be all just be subjective to certain generations of hip hop listeners.
