What is slightly annoying is the start of this generation was basura because publishers effectively didn't see the point of consoles anymore, thinking mobile gaming was a safer, cheaper and more profitable bet.

4 years later with the mobile market saturated instead of seeing the writing on the wall for that form of monitization, publishers have decided to fold the same predatory tactics into full priced games, where it is even more unwelcome.

As I said, this shyt is here to say, but it will get to a point where the insane profits of old stop. You can only bleed people dry so much.

Micro transactions destroy a basic fundamental principal of gaming, which is reward and progression.

You work hard to unlock certain items and you feel a sense of accomplishment. If you can spend money on unlocking things you would normally earn, it destroys the work and reward aspect of the game.

Sure the transactions may not be mandatory but be realistic often times than not you earn in game currency at a sluggish rate compared to those that use their parent's credit card to pay for micro-transactions.

This shyt is literally destroying what gaming is at its purest state. Stop defending this bullshyt and understand that it is nothing more than a greedy corporate cash grab and is destroying the fukking art.

Everyone is gonna bytch about this heavy for about 48hrs :damn:

Not understanding how this dude from Reddit dropped some jewels -

-snip-

The reason this works is two-fold: 1. Journalists who cover the initial outrage feel that, ethically, they have to post the follow up but probably aren't going to do the research to figure out if the changes are substantial or effective at fixing the actual issue. (Edit: I've started seeing articles pop up already about the "changes" and at best, all they do is parrot the good research that various Redditors have done.) 2. Loyal fans who get fed up with it and decide not to buy the game are desperately searching for a reason to forgive EA so they can play their neato shooty game so they'll take any crumbs they are given.

-snip-

Great read.

The bold really highlights how pathetic the gaming community as a whole really is. "Journalism" is akin to affiliate marketing and gamers are all bark no bite. Companies are dictating bullshyt standards and gamers willingly bend over. It's insulting.

Then you add in the Neogaf hivemind and you realize why gaming has such an embarrassing stigma :hhh:

360 era created paying for mappacks from suckas like you. Thats the point. They used to be free as a thank you to the community. Til they realized morons like you would pay for them.

$20 for 4 new maps :mjlol: used to be free for 5-10 maps :heh:

all the (first) Gears of War mappacks were supposed to be free. the first one was free (sponsored by The Discovery Channel). but they backpedaled, and charged for the second mappack, but made them free a few months later

These microtransactions are embedded into the designs of games now at the level that they're trying to make acquiring stuff in game excessively difficult to encourage people to spend money on them. They make shyt tedious so you'll feel like fukk it I'll just buy it and even if you don't buy it that tedium is still there to be dealt with.

Even if you don't deal with them directly indirectly you'll still have consequences for them.

That’s the big thing. They make it so tedious that it discourages you from playing the damn game. That ends up making there to be no incentive to play every type of mode in the game or to try unlocking it. This is really bad for the long term viability of games going forward to keep this up.

EA took Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker characters that were available by default in the original Battlefront and tried to put them behind 40 hours of gameplay.

All these people saying it's just cosmetic are being fooled. It starts out just cosmetic and greedy companies try harder and harder to get you to buy and next thing you know your $60 game has pay to win elements in it because they think they can get more people to buy. The just cosmetic crowd is the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot of water.

Game companies can't get that inch because they'll want more and somebody will push things a bit then the next company will do a bit more and next thing you know it's out of hand.

Exactly. Eventually buying the game becomes like buying a psl that you have to buy before actually getting the season tickets which you still have to pay for. As soon as I saw that I scratched the game off my list. Gears 4 has this issue in some ways, but nothing that harms the fun of the gameplay at least. Compared to gears 3 it’s night and day though since all the mutators and characters and weapon skins were unlocked by actually playing various game modes which directly encourages you to play all types of the game. Halo 5 was a great example. There’s nothing in the game that encourages you to play every game mode or that makes it feel rewarding in any way.
